Saints Defense (what did I just watch)

Someone help me understand last nights game please... Defensive secondary is the area I’m least able to diagnose.

Did our defense ‘get good’?
Did Tampa play that bad? 8 yards rushing and less than 220 total.
Did Spag’s let the defense call their own game?

All three?

FFS, that secondary went from sh1t-show to prime time in 7 days.

A Tom Brady offense with less than 20 minutes of total possession!

A definite standing slow clap for the defense but WTF do I expect next week :)?

Next week home against a 40-whiners team without Garoppolo and possibly Kittle.

Lather, rinse repeat!

Heh... We are talking about the Saints aren’t we? We send Brady for a nap but some no name kid will put up 400 yards and a 40 burger. :bng:

I think it’s two things. 1. Finally healthy 2. Great Game plan

Michael Thomas opens up the entire offense!

It seemed like the saints took out a half season of frustration on TB.

The Defense was healthy last week and MT doesn't play defense?

Re: Saints Defense (what did I just watch)

When Tampa threw away their game plan because of the big lead and literally passed the ball on every play, it freed us up to be more aggressive. It was a special night and we won't have that luxury next week against a team that is committed to the run.

Re: Saints Defense (what did I just watch)

It was a one sided affair the entire game. It was so good to see Tom Brady look rejected and stumped sitting on the sidelines trying to figure out what the hell is going on here. The Saints dominated the game from the very beginning. Looking pretty good setting course to the playoffs.

Re: Saints Defense (what did I just watch)

It's all mental. Lattimore always plays big against Evans and the DL was active. There was a media clip of Arians talking about Hendricks was the easiest player to block on the line and he played like a man on a mission. I also think when we are the underdog we play with a huge chip on our shoulder. 60% of the country and all nbc talking heads picked Brady and the bucs. Big shoutout to the OL. They played great. Only hiccup was a bad design play when you tried to block a premier pass rusher with a TE and no help. That will never work. Great Win

Don't look now but Trey Hendrickson has 7.5 sacks in 8 games. Good for 3rd in the league...

Guy has quietly been balling out.

Too bad we'll lose him after this season. He's gonna want some money and the Saints will keep Davenport instead. Which is really too bad. That kid has been awesome.

If he wants to stay he can. Contracts can be structured to give him s fair market price ... especially this next season. Because off the lack of ticket revenue this season the players know new contracts will be down next year across the entire league.

Let's just bring Tiffany home first. Worry about next season, next season.

Enjoy the ride!

With the addition of Alexander we should have a fast defense

Re: Saints Defense (what did I just watch)

When your D line can bring consistent pressure like that, it makes things a little easier on the back end.

Brady was hit, hurried, harassed and humiliated all game.

Re: Saints Defense (what did I just watch)

The offense did what they were supposed to do. They went down and scored following three and outs. That put pressure on the Bucs offensively to try EVs find a spark. Our offense finally took the pressure off the defense and the defense flourished. I saw a lot of 2-man under as well as the usual Cover 1. Jenkins looked great last night, partly because Gronk can’t outrun him, but also coming up to make tackles and backs out of the backfield. Hopefully they keep it going.

Re: Saints Defense (what did I just watch)

As of right now Davenport is the engine that runs the Dline. We’ve been saying for the last few years, if he stays healthy, look out. Marcus pushes whom ever is blocking him in the QB’s lap. This allows for Trey and guys like big O to feast. Cam does the same thing from the other side, but when their names don’t show up in the stat lines it’s interpreted as not contributing. The guys on our edge are ballin.

Deuce Windham has a film study of some defensive busts by the secondary:

The bottom line is that while the scheme has been sound and that on any given play most defenders did their job, the busts have been caused by one guy in the defensive backfield making a mistake.

Last night the secondary did not make those mistakes. Limit the mistakes and this is what can happen.

Tampa Bay Played That BAD..... :dunce:

Our secondary usually steps up for Tampa, especially Lattimore. I saw Brady reading his play card after the second interception tell himself “I don’t know what they are doing” referring to our defense.

One of the announcers mentioned our D said they were working on disguising coverages all week.

Keep in mind....

WE RANKED 7th in total yards (before playing tampa).

There was an illusion that this was a bad D, but the reality is that we gave up to many free plays on penalty yards.

Control the penalties on D and the true colors show.

If I’m reading correctly, as of right now our D is ranked 3rd in yards given up per game.

You are reading correctly. The Saints defense is 3rd overall in total yards given up per game, 12th in passing yards per game, and 2nd in rushing yards per game.

That doesn't sound like the crappy defense that some around here were claiming.

Precisely, NFL QBs dont pick apart good coverage they find and exploit the one guy 2 feet too far. When you aren't playing your natural style a single thought can cost you two feet.

Winner winner chicken dinner.

Defense is #1 in penalty yards. 456
Offense is 4th lowest at 125

Add the penalties to the yardage allowed ad we are 19th in yards per game allowed, and 17th in points allowed .

Keep in mind teams come together at certain times... right now is when we want out team to come together for the play offs.

I think Payton was holding back part of the playbook until we met the BUCS again

Will we see them in the playoffs?

But teams offensive weapon against the Saints is to throw deep
Not even accurately
And get the PI

Half of Brady’s offense in the first game was this

Was this the game where DA dials back the playbook so our players can play faster? We had good coverage in the secondary last night and almost no flags to extend drives. Things are looking up folks!

Dont get me wrong Trey is nice, I still dont believe he's a full time DE. I like 4-3 DEs to be be a force against the run, maintain gap control, pass deflection, force offenses to scheme opposite of you.....That position is more than just sacks thats Why Cam has been so valuable to the Saints, he's waaay more than a pass rusher.

Cam and Davenport are giving Trey the ability to get the bling but they deserve just as much credit or more.

Trey is trending to reach at least 10, 11 SACKS for 2020. With that production, I'll be surprised if a few teams don't view him as a quality STARTING DE and throw serious money his way in Free Agency. He just won't get it from the Saints.

Good for Trey though :bng:. He's played extremely well this season.

If he goes elsewhere I hope he gets it. Although, I really think he is a product of the system. He is all motor but doesn't have the over-the-top moves and techniques as do other top DE's. What he does have is a freer lane to the QB than most others with the contributing pressure.

Oh, and by all means YES, he has played extremely well. There's something to be said about a player that takes advantage of their opportunities.

T-Rex has earned a nice second contract through hard work. I don't know if it will be with us but I hope so. I love a guy with a non stop motor that never stops hustling.
