Sean Payton: Jameis Winston will have opportunity to win starting job post-Drew Brees

Jameis Winton, thrown overboard by the Buccaneers and coach Bruce Arians after a full season of adopting Arians’ no-risk-it-no-biscuit mantra, currently serves as the backup to the backup with the Saints. Coach Sean Payton recently said that Winston eventually will have a chance to become the starter.

“He’s going to have that opportunity the minute Drew [Brees] leaves,” Payton said on the Huddle & Flow podcast.

Sean P goes more in depth on the future at QB here …

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas...w/id1529372397

Taysom Hill needs all the competition he can get at the QB position either via Free Agency, the draft or JWinston … assuming he resigns with New Orleans in 2021.

I want us to draft a QB.

I know it might take an investment, but if they spent what they did on Davenport then it makes sense for a future leader at QB too.

Forced myself through the podcast, more about Sean trying to show how woke he is and how woke he wants the Saints to be...

Not sure what office Sean's running for, but he needs to just announce for it already...

Interesting thought Dizz. I’ve been thinking that Payton would be successful with Winston or another experienced young QB out there. So I’ve felt that’s the way to go. But if he could get a Herbert or a Allen or a Mahomes with a draft pick, then the future would be super bright and it may fit the salary cap better.

I hope he was just being nice to Winston. Hill, Siemian and a rookie would be good with me.

I'm with you. Jameis and Taysom seem like stop gaps.

Have you considered the consequences of drafting a starter?

If you don't draft a starter you are only adding more uncertainty to the pile; if you draft a starter you are going to have to give away the future to move up into the draft high enough to get that guy, because we certainly aren't moving up in the draft through losing.

So does that mean we’re going to re-sign Winston because he’s on a one year deal? Is he going to take the same small contract?

Honestly I think we roll into 2021 with the same exact setup and hope for someone to rise above the others. May draft a 4th to add to the mix but otherwise, pobably, yes.

That article does make it sound like the Saints are planning/hoping on keeping Winston around after this one year contract. But I’m not believing that he’ll accept a benchwarmer seat, basically another year without a legitimate starting possibility, doubly so with that tiny contract.

My guess is he wants to play. My guess is that there are other teams who will pay him much more money AND give him a chance at starting.

If DB#9 is around in 2021, and I believe he will be, and if TH#7 is around, and I also believe he will be, then Winston has to move on to greener pastures. Assuming that teams will want him, and imho, the longer you don’t have gameday tape, the longer you’re not in the serious conversation for a starting QB’s job. He’s in his prime, he’s no longer a rookie, which means the clock is ticking on his career.

If Winston plays it will be because the starter is either injured or failing miserably. That's why I am hoping to hell he doesn't play a snap.

Oh yeah I understand the potential consequences, but I stand by my initial thoughts, if they spent what they did on Davenport because they believed in him, then the same investment may need to be made for a future leader, if they rate someone that highly

I’m not disagreeing with you saintsfan. But, Why do you think that is true about Winston? He is Still young. Former no 1 pick. Threw for 5000 yards. Never had a season with more Ints than TDs. Convince me why Winston can’t be successful .

Jameis had a different coordinator damn near every year, no qb will be consistent or grow with that many changes in philosophy. And yea he threw over 30 ints last year but a lot of that goes on arians. Every qb from rapistberger, to luck, and even Brady to name a few all had career high ints with Arians in his first year. I don’t know why some hate the kid so much. In one full year under Payton I’d bet my paycheck he’d be a pro bowler. Not as good as Drew in his prime but really solid.

While it's fair pointing out that Jameis has had multiple coaching turnovers, am reluctant to heap praise for numbers he's had because most of it was in garbage time, after he'd thrown the Bucs out of games...

You may be right JP. But I don’t think a QB throws for 5000 yards just in “garbage time”.

If you go back and look at his numbers, nearly 60% of his numbers were with the Bucs down two scores...

Was able to chart this before on ProFootballReference.com; but they changed their format and they expired my subscription and moved those services to stathead which costs more than I want to spend right now...

Of note, Winston also set a new NFL-record high for pick-sixes in a season with seven...

Someone is trying to correlate and ignoring causation. Rookies throw Interceptions, Payton Manning threw 28 his rookie year. Coaches do not make QBs throw interceptions especially 5 year veteran QBs.

Interceptions are bad decisions or tipped throws. If a 5 year professional QB allowed his coach to make him throw INTs id say that’s evidence of further bad decisions.

I have no doubt you'd want to see Jameis play this weekend. Who knows? Maybe he'd play great. But I do know that for him to get the shot this week something bad would have had to have happened. Taysom injured and Brees not ready. Both bad.

Polar Bear still got you pinned outside your car in the cold?

Still the funniest avatar on Black and Gold - my Dad was still alive when that image hit the net, and man-o-man did we laugh everytime looking at it...

We printed it out using color laser and put it on our bulletin board in our business; always made us smile, laugh...
