Lonesome Dove

Ok, so has anyone watched the Lonesome Dove series? I got the box set collectores edition for Xmas and finally thru it in the other day. I was GLUED to the tv after about an hour and IM NOT A WESTERN movie fan.. have never watched them, never intended too, but after watching the lonesome dove series i am HOOKED. Im only 33 years old so westerns are not my thing. Does anyone else watch them? if so are there any other films that are close to comparison? and your thoughts on the series if you have watched LD

I'm only a year older than you, Belair, and I'm kind of right there with you on the whole western thing. They really aren't my style. Lonesome Dove was pretty good, though. However, I have seen a number of westerns that have stuck out and one is even in my Top 5 movies of all-time (Tombstone). The others I've seen that I really liked were the original True Grit w/John Wayne and the remake (Jeff Bridges was the shiz in that movie), The Cowboys w/John Wayne (great last words prayer quote in a prayer by Roscoe Lee Brown near the end), Silverado w/Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, Scott Glenn, and Kevin Costner. Shenandoah w/Jimmy Stewart (not really a western, but more of a Civil War time period movie, but still excellent). Young Guns (the 1st one. The 2nd sucked). Rio Bravo and Big Jake both w/John Wayne.

There are a few that I would suggest if you haven't seen them. I grew up in a family that loved westerns, so as a child, I felt that I was made to suffer through them. After I grew up, I learned to appreciate them a little more. There are definitely some good ones out there to be watched. You just have to open your mind up a little to be able to enjoy them like I had to do.

I watched both true grits last week and that is kind of what got my started. Tombstone is great also. I bought my dad the John Wayne collectors edition that im going to start on after he is done. Any others you can think of worth viewing?

You might like Dead Man's Walk, it's another Larry McMurtry miniseries..or A Fistfull of Dollars with Clint Eastwood...being a Texan, I like The Alamo with John Wayne. Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman is great.
