The Essence of America
All political debates in America are centered around one theme, the balance of security and liberty. It is the very essence of our Country.
Papz asked about neutrality and I am not sure there is a neutral zone. There is probably a mean but Politicians are elected by votes, and those votes are generally garnered by differentiation between the parties. The issue with politicians is that somewhere in their life cycle they become crusaders for one party or another, or they take things to a personal level and are no longer trying to do what is best for the people but have become lobbyists for "their cause".
Politics aside, there is a center, but that center lies between freedom and security. Which is not attainable through personal will.
Liberty is not just one persons ability to do do as he pleases, but his ability to chose for him self. Security is the feeling that things are being taken care of, whether it be financial, health, etc..
Trust is where the break down occurs. History has taught us that no one man can do what is best for everyone, and when that person does what is best for himself he is no longer looking out for the people. Politicians are not elected on honesty anymore, they are elected on their ability appeal to the largest number of voters.
The fundamental difference:
Liberals are seeking security and Conservatives are seeking liberty. Liberals want to be able to go to bed at night and know that someone is keeping them safe, keeping their money safe, keeping their health safe, they want to know that everything is "fair". Conservatives want the liberty to be their own keepers and make their own decisions, they want what they have earned to be theirs and not taken from them. They want the liberty to assist others of their own free will. To deny those are the basic fundamentals is to be out of touch with reality.
The disparity is that one collective group wants to be taken care of and the other wants to take care of them selves. So, in steps the Government and in order to take care of one group they have to take away the other groups ability to take care of them selves.
In a perfect America there would be different laws for different people. Those who wanted to protect them selves would be allowed to and those who wanted to be protected could wait for the police to arrive. Those that feel that healthcare should be had by all would be allowed to provide healthcare to others, and those that believe we should be responsible for our own health care could do so by our own free will. People who understand the risk/reward of the stock market would be able to do as they please and those that want protection from them selves would be allowed to participate in only government approved stocks with win/loss limits.
The Left is good at asking questions with a lose/lose answer.. "Do you want people dying in the streets?" Of course no one wants that but Conservatives do not want their hard earned money ripped away from them and either answer looks bad.
The Right is horrible at asking the lose/lose questions. There is always one question that never gets asked when the debate over more government is asked. Do you like being micromanaged? Find someone, anyone... that answers yes to that right off the bat.
The is a sliding bar with Security on the left and liberty on the right. It is a give and take.
Why is America so damn stubborn in regards to the rest of the world? (This is a good one for our Saints fans from across the pond who are trying to understand American culture)
Because as a Nation we were, and are still, built to seek Liberty. We fought for our independence from Great Brittan, and our lands are populated with immigrants seeking the same independence from their host nations. We are an entire Country of people that came together, and still comes together to get away from being ruled by people that had their own best interest at heart.
