Rumor: Why Bress over Matt

Saints: Drew Brees signed a six-year $60 million deal, but it's really a one-year, $10 million contract, giving New Orleans a chance to find out if he's healthy and effective after surgery for a torn labrum and partial rotator cuff tear. He may not be ready for the opener. He has a $12 million option next year. It's surprising that Sean Payton wanted Brees over Leinart. One theory: With speculation that Tom Benson could sell the Saints in the near future, he had no interest in paying the $20 million-plus in guaranteed money it will take to sign Leinart.

I hope Terry Bradshaw and company are still around. It does make You wonder

Hagan good post, this is exactly what I've said from the beginning of the Leinart debate, "that Benson would not want to pay him". I guarantee you we will trade out of the number 2 spot to at least the 7 spot, if not alot lower (Denver). Don't say it can't happen because it can. The Broncos want Elway back in a bad way and Leinart is their man.

Benson = one cheap dude... passing up on one of the best qb's to come out of the draft because of money is ridiculous. Tough when you're a Saints and Yankees fan, get spoiled by Georgy boy who will never go cheap on me. If this is true I'm kinda suprised he even was willing to give Brees 6 years 60 million, almost makes me think he may be one and done, which I hope he isn't.

I didn't say he was going to sell just that he wouldn't pay for the pick at #2.

Ha he'll just be paying for D'Brick, Hawk or Williams at #4.

I still say no way with the Denver deal. If it's a straight up deal for their 22nd and 29th they would be clowned on ESPN all year. A franchise QB is worth far more than two low 1st rounders. Mangold is no D'Brick.

As much as this may be true, I was never sold on Leinhart to begin with. I was hoping the Saints would pick up Drew Brees as soon as the season was over last year. He was my number one choice. Kitna was my second. I wanted a veteran quarterback in charge for a couple of years while we train a young one (who could possibly be a superstar.) I was never sold on Leinhart or Young - atleast not with them starting their first year into the league.

All I'm saying is that there are logical conclusions as to why we would take Brees over Leinhart. Some people actually wanted it to happen and it wasn't 'about the money.'

I live in Northern California and have for almost forty years. Matt Leinart is a very good QB but he's not Elway. Leinart played on a great team in a week conference. Elway played on a crappy team (Stanford never had a winning record while he was there) in a strong Pac-10. Leinart can't run very well. Elway could...very well. Leinert has some arm strength issues. Obviously Elway didn't. Leinert went to SC, hardly an academic powerhouse when it comes to its' athletes. Stanford? Carry a 3.0gpa or you don't play.

Wait til the workouts...and then New Orleans will realize they should pass on Leinert and draft Jay Cutler.

I think it has been established that Denver wants to have less picks this year because of a cap crunch. #22 and #29 is way short of value for #2. But even if it wasn't, they are looking for less money paid out. Ideally they would want to trade their lower half first rounders for 2007 first rounders they think would be upper tier. New Orleans history would make this not much of a risk/guess. #22 or #29 for a possible #1 to 16 next year.

i would love this cuz i think the kicker would be that pick ending up later in the first than what they gave up- with the big turnaround on schedule for this year.

I'm a huge Matt Leinart guy, I think he's going to be a very good player. However, I've come around to the moves the front office is making. I'll be happy with the Drew Brees signing if we can trade down and pile up picks. If we can't trade down and we pick at 2, I would rather have Leinart and not have signed Brees, unless Bush falls to #2, I'd be happy with him also at 2.
