FALCONS TAKING HARD LOOK AT RYAN, BROHM
Posted by Mike Florio on April 7, 2008, 8:22 p.m.
With a quarterback depth chart that features names like Chris Redman and Joey Harrington, the Atlanta Falcons are taking a hard look at Matt Ryan of Boston College and Brian Brohm of Louisville.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that team officials spent plenty of time over the weekend in Boston with Ryan. They also privately worked out Brohm.

The contingent included coach Mike Smith, G.M. Tom Dimitroff, and owner Arthur Blank. (Memo to Mr. Blank: We know you have good intentions, but you are most likely getting in the way. Smith and Dimitroff would never tell you this, but they are more likely to do their best work without you hovering over their shoulders. Sometimes, less really is more.)

Indeed, Schefter suggests that some believe that Blank is “rooting” for Dimitroff to draft Ryan. Though it’s Dimitroff’s call, how in the hell could Blank’s feelings not be a factor? If the Falcons don’t take Ryan and he ends up being great for another team (like perhaps the Panthers, a division rival), it’s the kind of thing that could set the wrong tone for the new era in Atlanta.

We also think that this could all be a ruse. By focusing on Ryan and Brohm, the Falcons could be plotting to spring back into the bottom of round one for a crack at Delaware’s Joe Flacco.

Actually, the current, outdated draft trade chart allows the Falcons to move up well into round one. They hold the No. 34, No. 37, and No. 48 selections. A package including No. 37 and No. 48 would allow them to move all the way up to No. 17.

So the Falcons could address other needs with the No. 3 overall pick, and then jump back into the round in order to get the guy whom they hope will make Falcons fans forget the names “Michael” and “Vick.”
