I just arrived home from my trip to cover Sunday’s game between the Saints and Redskins and wanted to catch you up on Monday’s events around the NFC South.

As you probably expected, Carolina coach John Fox wasn’t ready to say if Matt Moore or Jake Delhomme will start at quarterback against the Patriots on Sunday. He gave the usual spiel about “evaluating’’ and “day to day’’. Just a guess here, but I don’t think Delhomme’s broken finger is going to heal in just a week.

Atlanta coach Mike Smith said there’s a chance quarterback Matt Ryan could return Sunday against New Orleans. Smith also said Ryan might be cleared to practice Wednesday.

With the NFL focusing more than ever on concussions, Tampa Bay return man Clifton Smith could be done for the rest of the season. Smith suffered a concussion Sunday against Carolina.

Although Sean Payton was quoted as saying he wouldn’t rest players as the Saints attempt to go 16-0, the New Orleans coach wouldn’t address that issue in his Monday press conference. The Saints have home-field advantage still to play for. Even if they get it, I wouldn’t count on Payton just yanking all his starters. He might rest a few guys that are banged up. But, if you’ve got a shot at history, why not go for it? Besides, the Saints play their final two games against Tampa Bay and Carolina.

The previous post was supposed to be a link, but somehow it became corrupted. Here is a verbatim of an article about Ryan's possible return on Sunday.

With the way we played against the Redskins, I think the defense will step up and shut the falclowns down.

No matter who is playing for them, we have to go out and play like we are capable. We learned last week what a sloppy game can do to you.

Having said that, I live in ATL and there is bird **** everywhere they are so scared of us! WHO-DAT!

I dont think the Falcons have a chance. This is not going to be in 30 degree weather on a swamp. This is going to be in a dome.

Make it rain Brees!!!!

Re: Can we talk Falcons now?

The Falcons don't stand a chance, the D will be looking to rebound from their worst performance of the season and its a rivalry/division game. With a win/tie the Saints clinch a 1st round bye in the playoffs that right there is enough motivation to go dismantle and destroy the Falcons come Sunday

It's doubtful that the Saints will see him Sunday.

There seems to be hope that Turner will be back because he has a low ankle sprain.

In the end I guess we'll just have to see the injury report and practice reports later in the week.

680 in ATL said today Ryan might play, but made 2 good points:
first, the guy is immobile already. How statuesque will he be playing hurt? Second, the guy has sucked this year, especially lately. Getting him back doesn't change much.

ATL is missing 3 starters on the OL and their DB's blow. They'll probably come out fired up for this game, but last week they were flatter than the Pabst Blue Ribbon pounders I found at the bottom of college cooler in my parent's attic over Thanksgiving.
