As of Saturday evening, the New Orleans Saints had gotten their roster down the league-mandated 53 man maximum that all teams must abide by. There were not a whole lot of surprises even though some big names were left without a job.

Once the 53-man roster was set in place, then the Saints could go about assembling their practice squad team. This team consists of eight players that can practice with the team throughout the season and also be called up to the active roster at any time and as needed.

~ QB Sean Canfield
~ DT DeMario Pressley
~ WR Montez Billings
~ G Brandon Carter
~ LB Harry Coleman
~ CB Reggie Jones
~ FB Matt Clapp
~ TE Dustin Mitchell

Canfield was the fourth quarterback on the roster and is a rookie quarterback out of Oregon State. He saw no real action in the preseason except for a few kneel downs so it made sense for him to end up on the practice squad.

Coleman made a nice play in the final preseason game against the Tennessee Titans by recovering a blocked punt and running it in for a touchdown.

Clapp and Mitchell were not with the Saints at all throughout training camp, but were let go by other teams and ended up here in New Orleans. Clapp signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent this year and was recently released by them. Mitchell is a Louisiana product out of Lutcher High School and Louisiana Tech.

A few other notes to advise you of as the Saints get ready for their season opener on Thursday:

~ Defensive end Junior Galette has been moved to linebacker. He has also switched his jersey number from 67 to 93 which was most recently worn by defensive end Bobby McCray, who was recently cut.

~ Linebacker K.C. Asiodu changed jersey numbers from 49 to 54. 54 was most recently worn by former special teams' captain Troy Evans who was just cut.

~ Pierson Prioleau has been named the new special teams captain.

~ Running back DeShawn Wynn changed his jersey number from 43 to 21 which was worn most recently by the released Chip Vaughn.

~ The Saints had intentions of keeping young Jeremy Parnell but he was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins.

Hmmm............switching positions has helped some players go farther in the NFL and it appears that the coaches don't have a problem switching players positions what so ever. Junior must have a lot of potential to get on the final roster while switching positions.

I hope y'all are right about this Junior kid. I haven't seen him play yet, but the way most people talk about him. Makes him sound like a really good player.

I was thinking he should play LB since he plays like Rickey did and Casillas is out. Man, I hope he takes to the position fast. Shanle better go back to Sam b/c he looked Slloooooww out there at Will.

That bull rush and tap punt block Junior did was funny. Should have picked up the ball though.

Happy for Billings I think this guy is a play maker - in the makings. I see him coming in to help out on ST's as well.
