Mardi Gras
 

Hey just was wondering if any of you still get excited about Mardi Gras. I know everyones older now and it not like when we were kids but want anyone opinion. The reason I'm asking is because I missed Mardi Gras last year and the Saints victory parade and I'm really pumped for this year me and a couple of my boys are leaving for New Orleans Friday about 5 a.m and I can't wait to get down there and get me 12" shrimp poboy fully dress with hot sauce damn i'm hungry now. New Orleans is the only place were you can get 20 dollar gas, an shrimp poboy and a bottle of Crown or Hennessy or both in the same gas station. It's like excited about the parades it's the whole atmosphere and seeing my boys and family from the old hood. I was listening to the new in Houston and there talking about have Mardi Gras in houston and I was telling my wife that it wouldn't work because Houston is all about money the city would jack up price's on everything. Oh forgot to mention the most important thing THE WIFE AND KIDS AREN'T GOING.

I get excited about it every year but never have the resources to take the trip. That will change next year. We're planning a 10 day trip to New Orleans with the sole purpose of getting our Mardi Gras on!

I here you but like I said I'm going by myself and I'm saying with my sister all I have to spend money on is food, gas and liquor,liquor,liquor oh did I mention liquor.

Besides the off days I get from work, I don't care too much about it anymore. I don't like the congestion, ridiculous parking fees(I use to be one of those bastards charging you 20 to park in the quarters), and traffic. When my little ones are older, I'll probably start taking them to a parade or two.

Everything is Houston is one big corporate hangout, it would never work here cause they would try to infuse the mexican culture into it (yes i know they are catholic too) plus nothing is quite as good as the original

I think Mardi Gras is beautiful, and I think you should still get excited. I am, and I wasnt even raised in N.O.
We do have some stupid rules here in TX - I'm the 1st to admit that.
now you're wrong for that. JMO. You should raise your kids to appreciate Mardi Gras, just like you did. I aint mad & I sure cant judge, being a former dog myself, but if you still need somewhere to get in trouble-- You can do stupid stuff right here in H-town. N.O. should be about your culture and memories. Just my opinion-- I dont know anything.
I am a Mexican & I agree with that totally. If I'm celebrating St. Patrick's, I want to get Irish. If I celebrate Mardi Gras, I want it Louisianian. We have Mexican stuff every day here.

And #2, youre right on again. It would be "ReliantEnergy/Chase Bank Mardi Gras at Discovery Green-- a celebration of culture, diversity, and earth conservation. This year's Parade Queen is Sheila Jackson Lee. With special guests Kathy Griffin and Oprah. Musical entertainment from Fiestas Latino, and 3 nights of salsa & meringue. Friday night is Transgender Pride night. (trace of Cajun or Creole, anyone?)

tickets are 20.00, available at Macy's and Fiesta Mart. Party starts at 7pm and ends at 11:30pm. Remember to Drink Responsibly. (as HPD will set up 35 checkpoints surrounding the area.)

SkyMike is my first Houston friend; and he gets it! I am so tired of the "Girls Gone Wild" version of Mardi Gras...I spent my first fifty years in New Orleans and was only out of town once during Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is about the kids who march blowing their hearts out to be the loudest (they think the best); the kids who second line...the rhythm is in them as it is in me. I can feel the beat of the base drum in my chest as the band comes closer. The fight for throws, only to turn around and give them with a laugh and smile to the one you almost knocked down to get them. The marching societies before Zulu, Zulu with your donuts, Rex with your po'boy and what seem like hours of truck floats blowing their air horns. Garbage bags full of beads...the reason that NOLA is sinking...I only know that I miss it. I had a great aunt who worked in the mayor's office and she told me that the most often question was asking to speak with the "person in charge of Mardi Gras."
No one can believe that it just "happens."

I guess I really knew that I wasn't in New Orleans any more when driving down I-45 and saw a billboard for "Mardi Gras in Galveston...tickets available at Ticketmaster. Huh? Tickets?

Oh, and by the way...I bet I can tell where you got dem shoes...

Skymike my kids come down for Mardi Gras every year just this year I'm saying 7days and you know Houston they will try to take me to court because my kids missed to may days of school even do they haven't missed a day of school in two year and plus the following week there off a week for spring break. Skymike I like you your real I'm black not African American and you don't have to make everything about your ethnic culture Mardi Gras is about fun and everyone getting together and and having fun. One of best friends is Mexican and he goes down every year and my whole family loves this jacka$$.

I took my wife and kids to the Mardi Gras in Galveston this past weekend and if i'm lieing I'm dying it was so boring they had a parade around 6 p.m I thought it said 7 p.m about time I parked it was over. So they had a carnival down the seawall which was a waste of time but the kids had fun so who cares right.
