Harper Becoming a Thug?

I've posted my dislike for Harper as a Defensive Back on this site; have had my disagreements with some about his game...

But the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties he's drawn or becoming more regular than defensive stops for this squad...

Frankly, I like a "tough" defense - but the kind that Rickey Jackson and Vaughan Johnson led, not this thuggish brand that Harper has shown as of late...

Maybe if/when Greg Williams leaves after this season, he can take "Toast" with him...

saintfan 12-11-2011 09:52 PM

Bust 'em up Harper. Our D needs all the fire it can get. If Suh is available I'd sign him too. Seriously.

halloween 65 12-11-2011 09:53 PM

If he does we want have anybody that will get a qb. sack or tackle anyone. I like Harper.

JoanieNTX 12-11-2011 09:57 PM

I love Harper! We need a bad boy! Love da fire!!!

RockyMountainSaint 12-11-2011 10:04 PM

To answer the question in your thread title. NO!

You could have followed up by saying: "I HATE ROMAN HARPER."

Had you done that, you would have saved yourself some typing.

Every subsequent keystroke says the same thing............

breesfan27 12-11-2011 10:44 PM

I don't think he's a thug. Was the facemask wrong? Yes. Was it justified? Hell yes! The way things were going for them, they would have gotten flagged anyway, might as well make it worth while. Just my opinion though.

Halo 12-11-2011 10:50 PM

He's starting to raise PITBULLS!

jnormand 12-11-2011 11:03 PM

I like Harper. I have noticed his attitude as of late. Even in the Detroit game. I think he's is trying to be a little more aggressive. I actually didn't think the facemask looked intentional. I'm not against him being a jerk, as long as it doesn't cost us games.

AlaskaSaints 12-11-2011 11:15 PM

We are SO beatable on long passes. He's probably as frustrated as most, but it wasn't intentional.

Alaska still in TN

|Mitch| 12-11-2011 11:21 PM

Harper isn't the only reason we are so beatable in long passing situations. All we would have to do is play man to man with the safeties helping over the top, but no G.W. puts them in a "prevent" playing 20 yards off the receivers

Halo 12-11-2011 11:22 PM

I don't think this face mask was intentional. He threw his arm out to stop the receiver. The face mask was barely a penalty at that. His arm/hand grazed the mask and caught it.

Not trying to make excuses for him. He has been more aggressive this season, but today was not all on him.

Turbo Saint 12-11-2011 11:23 PM

definitely NOT intentional...no one is dirty on our team...c'mon now.

It wasn't intentional by any means. When they slowed it down, he grabbed his should pad, slipped to the helmet, and then the mask. Had he not held on, it would have been a touchdown. It was a necessary play and yet accidental play. It isn't the first time nor last that it happens on the field.

There is nothing about Harper that radiates thug. He's well spoken and doesn't prance around the field like he owns the place. A few of his "hits" were message senders... like "don't go after our players knees when blocking" . He's a leader on this team and protects his players. I wish we had more Roman Harpers on this team.

hitta 12-11-2011 11:43 PM

lol dirty or not, it stopped them from getting into the endzone on the play. 15 yard penalty was a good trade off.

I don't want either of those guys to leave! Harper is arguably the Saints best defender and he and Williams helped the Saints win their first Superbowl.

Crusader 12-12-2011 02:14 AM

Harper is playing on the line the whole time. Sometimes the line gets crossed but thats why I like him.

Belair57 12-12-2011 02:48 AM

sorry, but I for one would be ok with a penalty a game of something that was totally uncalled for...... as long as it intimitated the other team...I like dirty, tough football, the kind that is played in gravel parking lots with no refs..if you know what im saying

Michigan_SF 12-12-2011 05:43 AM

Should be interesting to watch Harper vs Carolina later on.

95shakinpf 12-12-2011 05:58 AM

I think Harper was trying to stop the TD. He did. The facemask grab didnt look intentional but it happened and he was penalized for it. Sorry if you disagree but Harper helped win the game!
WHO DAT!!
And unless we acquire Wade Phillips or someone equal to him as Defensive Coordinator I wish for Greg Williams to stay right where he is.
IMHO

Absolutely not. He saved a TD on that play, and if you go back and watch the replay he actually grabs the guys should pad area first, but as the player continues his hand hits the face mask.

Agreed, it looked really bad in normal speed, but on second look in slow mo it wasn't that bad at all

dizzle88 12-12-2011 07:15 AM

Harper didnt mean to get the facemask, but he had the balls to make a hit on that play unlike Patrick Robinson, I know he's beatable in some pass situations but he didn't get beat yesterday and he's our best tackler

Budsdrinker 12-12-2011 07:19 AM

Look Harper was in full speed and the receivwer stopped to make a cut and when he did Harper got a handful of facemask. It wasn't intentional but it happen. He is not a dirty player.

pinch 12-12-2011 07:36 AM

If you want to dislike him for sucking in coverage that's understandable, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to prove he's a dirty player, much less a thug.

I usually get seriously T-ed off about stupid unsportsmanlike penalties, but if you're going to try to rip a guy's head off like that, you may as well do it after a huge gain where there isn't much impact. Obviously it was an accident, so you can hardly label him a thug for it, but maybe it was a good time to send someone a message.

Well said Papz. I'd give you two likes if it let me.

Harper is playing some great football. I think this may be the 2nd week in a row that he didn't allow a completion, and last week we played a LOT of zone coverage.

All of our players play with a chip on their shoulders. They are a reflection of Gregg Williams.

Agressive? Yes
Dirty? No

Saint_LB 12-12-2011 07:52 AM

Was gonna make a joke about him getting old just to mess with Danno a little but thought better of it. There is just nothing funny about a guy getting old!

Amen young man, amen.

Seer1 12-12-2011 08:04 AM

At least he got the man down which is more than we can say about Patrick. Say what you want about Harper, but remember, he's tackling for two.....

RaginCajun83 12-12-2011 08:06 AM

So first the NFL tries to sissify the defense and now you're all for the defense playing like a bunch of sissies, good grief the Dome Patrol, Ronnie Lott, Jack Tatem, hell any great defense that made this league great would have its **** taken from them with these offense first rules that are ruining the great sport that we love

OldMaid 12-12-2011 10:23 AM

Facemask pull I saw by Harper was with Harper and a Titan walking all alone. Wrong. Dirty.
I do not like unsportsmanlike conduct.
When you do a thing like this, it penalizes your team.
This was intentional.

Sometimes a facemask when tackling or a late hit is unintentional. These guys are runnning how fast and cannot stop on a dime.

I love, am all for agressive playing. Hard tackling. That is not dirty, but the NFL. It is not tennis or golf or baseball.

Someone mentioned The Burbon Street Bruisers, The Dome Patrol, smart, agressive, hard tackling, legal players.

Mardigras9 12-12-2011 11:20 AM

No way, keep it up Harper.

Euphoria 12-12-2011 11:29 AM

I disagree with him being called a Thug.

Sometimes a facemask can't be helped... just because you get a facemask penalty doesn't mean you're a Thug. Stumping on someone... that makes you a thug.

Another thing A Saftey is taught is ALWAYS stop a TD. Yes even if it results in a penalty. Even take a interference call if it means not giving up a TD.

mikesaintfan 12-12-2011 12:01 PM

id rather have him agressive than SOFT...the way the NFL hands out fines and penalties makes NO SENSE...so you might as well go all out if your gonna get a flag anyway...by the way it was UNINTENTIONAL....if you want some soft gentile football, go watch the chargers...lol

alleycat_126 12-12-2011 12:15 PM

No way that was intentional he was trying to make a play, that's all. Too aggresive, at times yes, but that is what he is paid to. Any team would be happy to have a safety of Roman Harper's character!!

papz 12-12-2011 12:23 PM

If our resident Falcons fan likes your post, then there's obviously something wrong with it.

hagan714 12-12-2011 12:25 PM

stupid at times but a thug? nag. frustration is probably getting to him. they can not stop anyone and give up way to many big plays

darstep 12-12-2011 12:50 PM

Thug? C'mon man!

I must have missed that incident. I'll be looking for it today when I rewatch the game.
The face mask that I saw was just bad luck after great hustle. Most folks on here seem to agree that he's a good representative, a hard player, team leader and is far from a thug.

What??? Without his facemask tackle/call yesterday we would have lost.
