I would love to see Delhomme start this Sunday. Brooks' performance has been one of the most scrutinized topics on this board. Personally, I'm not that happy with him because he almost always seems to make the wrong decision.

However, a lot of people in this forum, myself included, have talked about how much we like Delhomme and how he is the perfect fit for our offense. In reality, we don't know anything about Delhomme. Frankly, what he does in practice, preseason, etc. is completely irrelevant. It's what he does in the game that counts.

I'd like to see Delhomme play just to get a better opinion. Who knows, Brooks really could be the best quarterback we have. One interesting fact: at least one team to make it to the Super Bowl in the last three years has done so with a back-up quarterback.

nothing against jake but i wouldnt like to see him start, i think that if brooks is able to play then he should play, no ?s asked, what would happen to us if jake comes in and stinks it up, he hasnt practiced that much with the 1st team, and it would definetly hurt us in the playoff race and could mess up all our the timing in the offense

I don\'t want Delhomme to start either I must give him credit for closing the game up and getting that 3rd and 8 that we so desperately needed to run out the clock. But Delhomme has not had much game time experience of course neither did Brooks till 2000 and he won are first playoff game ever. But the game against dallas in 99 was a classic keith Poole burning Deion Sanders for a 54 yard scorching to the endzone he really turned on the after burners. Anyhow the next week either abromowitz coached against carolina or Delhomme just stunk it up for carolina to win 45 to something. But the point can be argued Delhomme did not have the offence we have now in 99.

As for me I like Jake, but AB IS THE STARTER!!! AB\'s numbers are solid no matter the spin you wanna put on it...SOLID. He makes mistakes like they all do, and he\'s a helluva lot better at this point than the great Brett Farve was at this point in his career by Brett\'s own admission. Ya\'ll actually think they\'ll sit Brooks? Gimmie some of what ya\'ll are smokin\'!

As much as I have questioned Aaron\'s judgement on certain plays and even knocked his ambition on occasion, I don\'t think the proper move at this point in the season is to bench him. Yes, I too believe that Jake is a good back-up and yes, he may have waht it takes to win. BUT, he has not gotten the reps with the first team, he has not spent more than a few minutes in game situations since preseason, our whole offensive unit is conditioned to play with him at the helm and our playbook is geared toward Brooks\' abilities, not Delhomme\'s.

If Brooks completely falls apart in a game somewhere down the line and he just can\'t get it together, then sure, put Jake in. But otherwise, \"dance with the one who brung ya.\"

Brooks may not be perfect, but then again, I\'ve yet to see the perfect quarterback. The SAINTS are a very respectable 8-4, pretty much a shoe-in for the playoffs and still have an outside chance of moving up in the seedings. We got there because Brooks led a stellar offense against the very best the NFL could throw at us.

Therefore, in my opinion, I say keep starting Brooks as long as he can pul his own weight.

Go SAINTS!!!!!

Starting Jake would be a great idea against the Ravens .

Heres why , Ravens have a good defense and starting Jake would confuse the defensive scheme. How many times has a back up come in and lit the playing field up . Bulger immediately comes to mind , to bad , too late for it to cross Fartz mind .

Brooks gets the rest he needs on the arm . Had to put that in for the Brooks loyalists .

Jake gets sometime with the first string , nothing like going into a play off run with an injured 1st string Qb and a cold 2nd string .

If Jake shows good judgement and poise , Haslett will know for sure he does not have to put up with a bad day from Brooks , they only play 16 games and a couple bad ones can blow the play offs .

A good showing from Jake should light a fire under Brooks and might just get him to take the leadership role he needs to , to command this team .

Sitting Brooks is not going to throw off the offense\'s timing , on that train of thought Jakes pass to win the game against Tampa should have been in the stands somewhere . Who do you think has been taking all the snaps this week ???? So who is Ready for the play calling against the Ravens ???

Brooks becomes all too predictable when Duece is out , or injured . Confusing the Ravens with the Quarterback switch may be to the Saints advantage . Worst case , Brooks can go in .

I see your point, saintz08.

If Brooks can\'t practice all week and won\'t be in shape on Sunday, then it makes sense for Jake to get the start. But if Brooks is back up to speed, I say play Aaron.

Then, if Brooks\' shoulder starts acting up or if they just want to use the injury as an excuse because Brooks is blowing the game, pull him and put in Jake.

Just some continuing thoughts on this subject...

Go SAINTS!!!!!

I like Delhomme to start this week because there is no way possible for AB to be 100%. Im not saying Delhomme is going to be the answer but everyone has to start somewhere. AB might have all these great numbers but if you look would you trade those numbers for the INT\'s or the bad decisions he makes. My biggest problem with AB is he is trying to be a QB that he is not. It\'s like he doesnt want to be this running QB or something. I agree that it\'s not all his fault and at times he is unquestionably the man for the job. If he is not 100% healthy then he shouldnt play. I think Jake at 100% is better than AB not being full health. I just hate when people talk about his great numbers when he makes some big mistakes too. Numbers dont mean nothing, its getting the job done when it counts. Look at the Browns game, where was all his numbers at when he got to the redzone. Im 100% behind Brooks whenever he is healthy. Start Delhomme whats the worst that could happen he throws a few INT\'s. You cant blame the loss on him because it\'s a total team effort. It doesnt matter who is running the controls of the offense the key is Deuce, if he is hurt u could have Joe Montana back there and it would not make much of a difference. The biggest question here is if Deuce is healthy enough to play and if AB is 100% :exclam:

i dont agree nelly, if deuce was not 100% would u want him to play, of course you would, and it should be the same with brooks, its football for crying out loud, people get hurt, and its only a bruse, its not like he tore his rotator cuff or anything, its not like he cant throw the ball. its a freakin bruse, and AB will play, and he will play well, and thats my prediction for this weekend.

Haslett can start Jake and go to Brooks if Jake gets in trouble .

This is not a controlled environment , home game . The recent storms could make it real cold at kick off . The Ravens are missing starters on defense and for Petes sake the Panthers beat them . In that environment if Brooks rushes it , he could tear something in his shoulder . Duece is still hurting , sit them both the first half and see what happens .

Starting Jake?...hhhmmm....interesting. I wouldn`t be totally against that. Jake obviously would be going in with a good confidence level after last weeks closure, and what a slap on the Ravens \"uh, our golden boy is resting, we`re sending in the second string.\" I`d rather see Jake go in against the Ravens than against a much improved Viking team the following week. You know the Baltimore defense will becoming after Brooks knowing the slightest hit could re-injure him and send him to the sidelines. So, even though I have a better attitude toward Brooks after last week, I would not be totally against Delhomme taking the reins and let Brooks rest. (assuming of course that Brooks is not 100% or could be easily re-injured. If Brooks is 100%, I say play him. You can`t replace momentum.)

Deuce at 10% is better than our other 2 RB\'s combined at 100%. Thats why he plays no matter what. Look at the Eagles you dont necessarily need the starter in there. Also, the last few SB\'s have been won with back-up QB\'s. I think Delhomme is competent enough to lead the Saints. He not try to force nothing and he very efficeint. Even if it is a bruise on his throwing arm, it is still very painful and u cant use normal mechanics with it. He might make some good plays but overall I think he do more harm then good for the team.

pakowitz 12-05-2002 01:24 PM

the reason that the eagles have succeeded with their back up is not b/c he plays a super great offensive game but b/c he doesnt turn the ball over and he lets the D win the game, the eagles won last week playing the rams not b/c the offense won but cuz the D shut the rams O down. im not sayin jake isnt good enough to lead the saints, im saying that if AB is able to play, that he should so it doesnt disrupt the team and the offense

NellyFord 12-05-2002 01:32 PM

What if AB is able to play but not 100% and he comes in and stinks up the joint. Wouldnt that hurt chemistry too? I like the idea of him playing but not the whole game. If our D is so revived like everyone all of a sudden thinks it is because it shut down a non- high powered offense then let Jake just go out there and not lose it. Personally the D still scares the hell out of me and Im not sure if its the personnell or the play calling. Too many blitzes at the wrong time and not enough at the right times. I say we use this game as a measuring stick of sorts for our team. This game will be about heart and desire. We all know Deuce definitely has it and as for everyone bashing him about his injury plagued career at Ole Miss, guess we know who the man is now. anyways, Go Ricky Go, I can see that 1st rd. pick now!!! Deuce is still the man no matter what, he is the heart and soul of the team. He will make whatever QB we stick back there look like Montana.

The team chemistry thing really cracks me up . These are professional athletes , here today , capped out tomorrow . The west coast offense is about timing , the chemistry is there if a player sits a week or two .Knowing the other player besides you and his weakness is chemistry . Not sure Brooks has Chemistry with the receivers , that might explain why he looks lost about a third of the time .

I agree completely with that statement - Brooks does look lost quite often.

To the Brooks loyalists, think about this: Everyone thought the season was over two years ago when Blake went down and this unknown Brooks kid came in. I bet the Rams thought that about Bulger, the Patriots about Brady, the Ravens about Dilfer (although he wasn\'t unknown). The point is, here we have a good back up that everyone has confidence in. Give him his chance. At least he\'s not some unknown rookie.

Delhomme knows the Saints system, probably better than Brooks. He is the prototypical quarterback for the west coast offense, and most importantly, he\'s smart. If the plan is to control the ball and let our defense win for us (which I agree is laughable), then who do you think is better suited to do that? The injured interception prone Brooks, or a smart drop back passer built for our system?

Bottom line - Delhomme deserves his chance. If the Saints don\'t give it to him, he\'ll probably leave after this season so he can fight for a starting spot somewhere. Then who are we left with? JT - great. Then you would have to put Brooks on the field with a broken leg before you let that clown play.

To have that opinion means you\'re overlooking one very important factor. Brooks is the STARTER for a reason. If Jake was so much better (and he isn\'t) he would have (should have) shown that in camp. Nothing against Jake...I like him...but AB won the starting job for a reason...and at the time was making less than Jake. AB has thrown some INT\'S this year...every QB has, and his worst stretch was when he didn\'t have a running game. You don\'t yank your QB in the NFL because of one bad game or a few poorly advised throws. Where would Brett Farve be today if he got yanked every time he threw multiple INT\'S in a game? Stever Spurrior is learning that now. This ain\'t college. Stability at the QB position is key. You\'re all quick to point out the INT\'S, but none of you want to discuss the TD passes. Sounds a little short-sighted to me.

Johnny Unitas was cut by Pittsburgh before Hall of faming it in Baltimore.
Favre was 2nd string and traded from the Falcons before Hall of faming it in Packerville.
Which means what you show in camp ain\'t always all there is. But hey, that\'s what the coach\'s go on. In my own little humble opinion Jake can run this offense with the weapons it has the way it should be. The problem is that coaches are trying to make AB into a pure pocket passing QB (which Jake is). AB\'s not Montana, or Favre, or anyone close to that. The sooner these guys figure out they need to move AB around more when he throws the better for all....nuff said..

saintfan 12-06-2002 04:19 PM

AB was a...ummmm...3rd string in Green Bay...then 2nd behind Blake. Is he Farve...nope...never said he was. I never said he was Montana either. All I\'m sayin is if Jake was as awesome as people in here think (and it seems to be the ones that are anti-Brooks) then why didn\'t he beat AB for the Job in training camp...since he apparantly knows the offense better and is a better pocket passer and is smarter and all that jazz? Can\'t be a money issue...he was making more than Brooks in camp. Is it because of his Louisiana connection? Why are so many people in here wanting to get rid of Brooks? The reason Jake isn\'t starting and AB is must have SOMEthing to do with performance. Brooks has thrown some bad passes to be sure, but I\'ve seen him throw some lazers that few other QB\'s could throw.

Why in the world is everyone in such a hurry to bench Brooks? A few years ago he WAS the 2nd string QB who came in for Blake and took his team to the playoffs. We\'ve been there and done that. He got in the game and was simply to talented to take out. If not for AB\'s arm and a wonderfully fortunate special teams play we\'d have lost to the Rams in the playoffs...AB was a BIG part of that win as I recall.

AB is a quality QB with a bright future. Sure he still has things to learn, but WHY WHY WHY is everyone so interested in benching him...everyone except for me and the Saints coaches and a few other folks in here? WHY WHY WHY? I think you guys just like to see me get stirred up. :P

The reason is Saintsfan , and very well stated by yourself I must add is , he is no Favre and not even in the same league as Montana . Brooks was a third string quarterback , promoted to starter because of his exception ability to evade a pass rush . By both means of running and scrambling . Promoted by a Defensive coordinator / head coach in his first coaching tenure . Our offensive coordinator has never been anything but a quarterbacks coach , and a fine job he has done on Brooks . Does any starting quarterback in the league have worse basic throwing mechanics ??

Mueller put the talent on the table and told Haslett to coach . The fact that Mc Carthy is still the offensive coordinator in New Orleans , when they have a true offensive coordinator there in Riley still baffles me .

When you consider , Walsh designed the west coast offense for a medium ranged accurate passer , which Jake is and realize Brooks is not , you have to wonder if Jake would not be able to get more production out of the offense designed for his abilities .

Haslett is a good motivator , but definately not a brain surgeon as they say . Haslett was a defensive coordinator and player on defense , what is the weakness of the Saints ??
Hasletts first free agent signing to run the west coast offense in New Orleans ?? A short long ball thrower that has trouble throwing the sideline out pattern .

Notice the media dropping off the Brooks band wagon ??

You said it , he is no Favre ....

Interesting points Peach.

What do you know about Jake Delhomme. He looks like a guy who could help us. As of now, he is a UFA and if the Saints get a little carried away with a pricey FA and their TWO* 1st round picks they might not get to keep Delhomme. I think he will want significantly more than the minimum to be Brooks permanent backup. He would probably take the equivalent cash to have a chance to start . . . even for us.)

*(Ricky Williams will be reaching the 1,500 mark and the Saints will get their 1st round pick)

The main thing that keeps coming up is how great Brooks future will be. How he will only get better. I agree that he will but the truth is he is in the end of his 3rd year counting the end of 2000 as our starter. He cannot keep saying rookie mistakes. He is our starting QB because of what he did 2 years ago. He came in and took a team to our first playoff win and he was a PLAYMAKER. Since then in the last 2 years has he played one game like he played in 2000? No he hasnt. He had to learn the system over the offseason and in 2000 he just had to go in and make things happen. Now that he has to read D\'s and audible and the things that smarter QBs learn to do he isnt doing or learning to do. He has traded his playmaking label for the pocket passer and he is not good at it. He needs to swallow his pride make things happen and get back to what he was good at.

Jake gets alot of praise cause he is a smart QB that knows this system. He might not have all the talent(great arm or scrambling ability that Brooks has) Did ppl think Koy Detmer was going to come in and do what McNabb does? No but he came in and played great. Im not saying Koy will start over McNabb cause he had one good game Im just saying alot of ppl think Brooks is soo much better than Jake that we have no chance with Jake and they are wrong. Truth is Jake is smarter and more acurate thank Brooks and he knows the system better. Also I think he is a better leader. I mean taking the chance he did on that run/pass option at the end of the game proves he has confidence and the willingness to take alot on his shoulders.

If AB is not 100% he should not play. We need him healthy for the playoffs. If he comes in and gets hit and hurts his arm worst then what? We have Jake come in having only 2 starts and he has to get ready to start a game in the playoffs? Baltimore has alot of ballhawks and a hard hitting D so Brooks needs to take the week off.

Jake is back up cause he didnt win the job in preseason?!? Are you ppl crazy. Did Brady win his job in preseason? What about Kurt Warner? You cannot just put a QB on the field and have him be great cause he can throw it 70 yards and hit a target. Leaf had all the tools but no leadership or heart. Doug Flutie ring a bell he was never given a chance and he won a Heisman. Then he had to go to Canada and win a few MVPs and titles before he was given another shot at the NFL. He never had the talent but had the heart and leadership and that is what counts. Farve got traded cause he didnt get a chance to prove what he was. You think Atlanta would have traded him if they knew he was gonna be this good? Its not about what you can do in practice when nothing is on the line it is how you react when you get out there in a real game situation. Some ppl are just naturals when they get on the field they make things happen. Is Brady more talented than Bledsoe? No but he makes plays. It sumtymes isnt how talented a player is but how well he fits in your system. Last year we traded Ricky to a power running team cause we wanted a better receiver. Who would you say is having a better season? Its not that Ricky wasnt a great player but he wasnt what we wanted. Brooks is a great athlete, but is he right for this system?

Pakowitz-The reason why the Eagles didnt play a great offensive game was because that was the 3rd string QB making his first start of his career. The week before against the Niners Detmer lit them up. 18 of 26 227 yards 2 TDs and a TD rushing before getting hurt in the 3rd!

Aj Feely is like JT O\'Sullivan except AJ has been in the league for a year. You think JT Could come in and light up a team? Koy Detmer is kinda like Jake. A veteran on a team with a great starter and he knows the system but doesnt get much chance of showing his skills. Koy might never be a starter anywhere but he is a proven backup that deserves a chance to come in when the starter isn\'t healthy. Just as Jake is. Jake will not be asked to carry this team for the rest of the season but asking him to play this week so Brooks can get healthy is not too much to ask.

Brooks might be the best QB we have talent wise, but is he the best QB to run a west coast system? We have never had a true west coast type of QB since Haslett got here. If we are going to run a west coast system we need a smart QB with good accuracy and great leadership. Im not saying Jake is the guy to replace Brooks, but he seems to fit the system better.

What I\'m trying to tell you AB lovers is that AB isn\'t an awful QB. I\'m just saying that the Saints coaches aren\'t using him how they should. HE IS A MOBILE QB. THEY\'VE said as much. So WHY do they not use him in more of a mobile way?? What I\'m saying is that if you\'ve got a car that can take corners at 50mph & go straight at 100mph, then why run it at 40mph all the time?

Bottom line: either use AB in a mobile fashion or let Jake run the West Coast offense.

If the coaches don\'t figure out AB he\'ll be another Jake Plummer.

I gotta give Jake a hand. He performed well in relief today. I especially liked the way he broke away from that defender and scrambled for the first down in the fourth. It showed poise and allowed us to take over six more minutes off of the clock, not to mention allowed us to put three more points on the board.

I also have to say that Aaron also played pretty well today. He even had one 1st down run himself.

All in all, a pretty well quarterbacked game with no QB turnovers.

I\' guessing that \'pretty good\' in my book is about the same as \'normal\' in yours. Brooks has a few nice throws, a TD, one key run and no ints. His completion percentage was not too good, but he did not make any major throwing errors this week or get caught backstepping every other snap like he seemed to be doing with way too much frequency since mid-season.

So if I was comparing Brooks\' game today to how it has been the last few weeks (possibly excluding most of the Bucs game), I think he played pretty well.

I do find it rather amusing that Brooks has been the starter for now what , 2 1/2 years and it takes time to learn the system , learn control , learn leadership and learn to throw smarter passes . Jake comes in cold off the bench , with a total of maybe 4 NFL appearances and handles the offense perfectly and throws somewhere in the 90 % completion range . Brooks supposedly deserves all the admiration of supporters for hitting somewhere in the 50 % range .

Can it be said Bulger is better then Warner ???

If you look at performance at their position , you might see Duece # 1 NFC, Beerman # 1 NFC and Horn # 2 NFC .

Starters hmmmm

Gannon
Pennington
Brad Johnson
Tom Brady
Bledsoe
Garcia
Favre
Manning
Griese

On individual performance , these quarterbacks are better . They may not have a Duece or a Beerman or 3 quality receivers and a pro bowl tight end to produce the wins .

In on the field experience and overall skills Warner may be miles ahead of Bulger , but the one with all the wins is Bulger . Bulger has effectively handled his position better .

i believe that the reason that warner has had a tough time this year, is b/c of his hand, he has had trouble with his hand ever since last year and he was trying to protect his job and win while playin with a broken hand, so i dont think u can compare bulger and warner b/c we dont really know if warner was playing hurt or not

New poster here! If Aaron is hurt, dont start him! He is no good to us hurt. He is unable to help the team when he is hurt. The two sacks on him in the second half could have been crucial had the score been closer. My preference is for him NOT to be on the field unless he is 95% or better.

Jake has proven to be a very capable B/U. The two chances he has has over the last two games have been met with success. I agree with many who say we have a very good (and I think that is an understatement) B/U.

What do you ppl see in Brooks that yall cant admit Jake is a better QB for the system? Ok Brooks is hurt and didnt play great this week. What about the last 3 weeks? He has been a solid QB all year ProBowl?!? I dont see how you can call him a ProBowl QB. He has alot of TD passes yes, but when we have the best starting field position in the league cause of one of the best return men in the league, and we have one of the top backs in the league demanding 8-9 men in the box he should have stats like he has.

Look at Jakes stats. He should make the Probowl too. I mean 7 of 8 103 yards and the ONE incomplete pass was his first pass off the bench and he didnt warm up, but it still hit Joe Horn in the shoulder and he prolly should have caught it. You ppl are all about how great Brooks is please tell me when has he looked as good as Jake looked yesterday? He was in total contol the entire time he was on the field. Look at what happend when there was pressure he rolls out and hits an open man no one is open he tucks it and dives for the first. That is the heart that Brooks lacks. He doesnt have the comman or drive Jake has. Maybe because he was given the job by injury and Jake has been working to prove himself for a few years. Brooks acts like he has nothing to worry about when he plays bad he doesnt care but now will he start to worry with Jake proving he could start?

The truth is Brooks has all the talent needed to be a great QB, but he lacks 3 major things Heart, leadership, and the ability to read the D. Do you think Jake has them? Looks like he does. Im still not calling for a QB change, but you have to think that with Jake playing nearly perfect Haslett wont hesitate pulling Brooks if he struggles now.

For ppl to still talk about how Brooks is so much better than Jake I dont understand what yall see. Jake plays a nearly perfect game and you come in and defend that Brooks played bad cause of injury. Why didnt he play as good as Jake in the begining of the season he wasn\'t hurt then... oh and why did Jake play so good? Im guessing he was just lucky! 7 out of 8 tymes!!! What does a guy have to do to get respect?

The ability to make all the throws on the field . Brooks cannot make them .

The reason the Falcons own the Saints is because Vick knows Brooks is limited . The corners know to cover the hook routes and the slants because Brooks has problems throwing anything else .

Bucs own the Falcons because they have a faster linebacking corp. that can hold Vick on those runs . Derrick Brooks was connected to Vick yesterday .

Saints need a faster middle line backer , Clemmons is killing us against the Falcons .

The Falcons owning the Saints has NOTHING to do with AB. Our \"D\" gave up a total of 61 points in two games againts \'em. I don\'t think ANY NFL team should have to score 30 points a game to win. We averaged 26 points per game against \'em this year (35 in game one and 17 in game two). Our \"D\" was beat by a one-man gang. I just can\'t sit hear idle and watch you try and hang those two games on AB. We all know you hate AB, but you\'re taking it way to far man.
