Because Faulk would probably be a high 1st rounder if he hadn't injured himself, which has caused his draft value to fall and has made it possible to get a high 1st round talent LT with as low as a 5th round picks.
To me there's huge potential value in that type of a pick, but naturally Faulk has to pass the medicals in terms of that his recuperation from the injury is advancing as it should be (reports I've read say that he is indeed doing that).
Like I've said in another thread already, I think these picks would be all about the future and not necessarily the here and now. Faulk probably would be a red shirt rookie in his first year, while Jones could already take snaps this coming season at virtually any of the O-line positions, but the end goal with him would be that he'd replace De La Puente as the starting center in 2014 and perhaps replacing either Grubbs or Evans as one of the starting guards at a later date. Faulk would be the starting LT in 2014, while Marcel Jones would be the starting RT after being developed another year behind Strief, and potentially stepping in if Strief gets injured again. So, in this scenario, the Saints would either roll the dice with Charles Brown as the LT or get a vet 1-year hire to man that LT position until Faulk can get to the line-up.
I think this scenario would be very cost efficient, since they could get a 1st round LT talent at a 5th round price in both a draft pick and a rookie contract, so they could save some money to re-sign players like Graham.
