Draft Impact: Defense
The shift from the 4-3 front to the 3-4 formation had as much an effect on the Saints draft as the draft will have on the new defense...

But what really has jumped out to me, and it's a good thing - is how the combination of last year's defensive performance and the new picks has got alot of the holdovers from last year's debacled defense on notice, nervous...

Curious that Roman Harper nor Will Smith haven't had a published interview about the switch to the 3-4 nor the Saints Draft Picks?!?

Re: Draft Impact: Defense
"The reason Roman is garbage"
The last I heard from Roman was like late Feb. at one of the charity golf tourney's but his statements were something like:
"My agent and I haven't heard anything about a restructure or about a paycut nor have I heard anything about what my job will be in the 3-4! I am just going to playing golf and relaxing and taking it easy until my agent tells me otherwise"
See That's the crap that gets your job taken I get it is ok to be a golfer or be lazy but don't tell us crazed fans that just do it all your doing is basically saying I am as good as I can be and being or staying in football shape is not important to me "why Sam Bradford caught his slow ass from behind with a ten yd headstart a few yrs ago a joke out of shape pompus loser" so don't give me the reason why you stay out of shape and why your weak and pathetic just be it" See I know he is garbage but he could at the very least do and appreciate his highly paid and highly publicized job! So my only question this whole offseason was DC and Roman freaking Harper he has given me nightmares ever since his many missed tackles in Seattle then the next year against SF He is the worst coverage safety I think I have ever seen in the NFL it is pathetic Roman makes Bernard Pollard and Laron Landry look like Deion Sanders I mean it is crazy that we or our personnel people and scouts couldn't see on film that Roman was a total product of a blitzing 90% of the time either stunting plugging gaps or after the QB but he stayed in the box and they would actually use an olb more in coverage than a safety which is ludicrous in every since of the word but in a 4-3 you can get away with it if your LBs can cover which was why Shanle and Fujita were so successful and needed it was Harper basically switching positions with them on an every down basis if he was in the back half he was just an extra over guy without any real responsibility and supposedly reading the QB's eyes which he is terrible at and gets abused! Thank God for Sean taking a step back and taking off his rose colored glasses that were caused by Greg's schemes that made Harper an everydown blitzer which is his only ability he used to tackle but since his work ethic has gone so has his tackling ability!

Re: Draft Impact: Defense
I guess what's interesting to me is how much talent we already had in house.....

Galette, Wilson, White, Quddus, Lofton, Hawthorne, Jordan....
The most important storyline to me wasn't even mentioned and that is

Can we get a contribution on the D from someone we might not have expected it from for instance

Romeus, Chamberlain, Reddick, Thomas.... etc. To push the Vets.... and maybe even push them out.

Re: Draft Impact: Defense
All that said I wish Roman well just not on my Saints
"because he'll never be or do the things he used to do to be effective"

Re: Draft Impact: Defense
Yea Roman already knows he can't be successful in a system that asks him to cover which almost every 3-4 does because of the extra LB that is already on the field that can tackle, blitz, run, and cover better than a safety like him! Really he might literally be the slowest guy on the field pound for pound and worst tackling guy on the field also so why do you need him you don't!

Re: Draft Impact: Defense
None of you could tackle a grandmother with a running start, is my guess.

Most of you whining about Harper, do you have a big fat gut like most American yuppies?

Re: Draft Impact: Defense
I am not so interested in the DL this year. I think it will be ok nothing special just of. Just hold the line and contain the pocket is the most i hope for.

The rest of the unit does spark my interest.

LBer Corp will see if the old timers can play or not and how do the new UDFA shake up the rotation, if at all, by seasons end.

The secondary as whole and who is out on the depth chart.

It will be 8 games before individual battles begin to form because it should that long before we can start talking about the defense as a unit and not the sum of its parts.

I do not see anything earth shattering happen at all this year except a defensive unit forming. we did nothing in the off season really to make a huge change in the defense as a unit

The biggest change should be seen on special teams. the depth of the defensive unit has a greatest chance showing improvement this year.

pray for two maybe three pleasant surprises by season end and start planning for 3 to 4 pick in next years draft.

Re: Draft Impact: Defense
If the drafted and undrafted players show some potential this year the nucleus of a decent defense could be there.Im hoping to see more turnovers created and a better run stopping defense.
In hopeful and with Hicks/Bunkley/Jordan/Jenkins
I think the line should hold up better as a three. Hopefully the linebackers can step up and get some pressure on the opposing QB.

As much as the lack of QB pressure and coverage was poor last year, missed tackles was maybe the biggest issue.

Most of all I think a new more aggressive scheme will help.

going back to an aggressive scheme philosophy it is not a "new" philosophy for this unit. playing in a 34 line up is.

do not give to much credit to anyone for what was miss used last year.

yep i will run ruff shot on this topic. Our DC gets no credit for anything that is already here.

nit picking i know but i have to.
