His wife tweeted back to Rita that he's been blessed his whole career injury wise, until now.

Looks like he's gone.

Thats not good folks. While not the player he once was, he was still gonna be a solid contributor this year.

Next man up.

Re: Will Smith might be out for the Season

He'll be missed at DE but not at LB...

Get started on your rehab now, William.

Re: Will Smith might be out for the Season

Now we're dangerously thin at OLB. We've got a bunch of kids on the roster who are gonna have to grow up real damn fast.

I expect we'll bring in some stop-gap vets and journeymen for a look.

I'm pretty sure Butler will be the designated returnee.

Still like to know what happened with Chase Thomas, or what didn't happen...

Word was he just wasn't fast enough (explosive) combined with several other OLB prospects that were ahead of him.

Just got confIrmation from wwl. Hes gone.

Re: Will Smith might be out for the Season

I guess its Martez and Galette at the Jac. I wonder if we'll avoid playing Wilson at the SAM just to make sure we have enough talent at Jack

I'd imagine scrounging up a decent SAM is a bit easier than finding a Jack LB.

Anyone look to see whats out there? Who's expected to be cut that can help? Might we be forced to trade a good player?

I'm curious to see whether or not we try to reach an injury settlement or leave him on the IR for the year and allow him to collect his salary.

Re: Will Smith out for the Season

I do not think we can afford to do anything that accelerates that dead money which is $3M over our cap limit.

I'd rather Smith go down than Jordan.

Re: Will Smith out for the Season

Is anybody really concerned about this loss? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

The man cannot play OLB. He would've been a fine backup at 3-4 DE but this is not a serious loss.

It is a very serious loss.. Not a loss of talent but a loss of warm bodies and we haven't much cap to work with.

Packs may have some decent scrubs. I'd start there.

Coverage wise no not concerned

Run defense wise...definitely, Smith played the run really well in preseason.

At least it makes all the Smith talk go away now. Never want to see it, but better now than first game of the season. They will have a little time to work on fixing the position.
Good luck Will.

I would bet there is at least 1 decent talent the 49ers are trying to stash on their PS.

LOL, no. Trust me he will not be missed in the slightest. This is not 2009, or even 2010, 11 or 12. The man CANNOT play linebacker AT ALL and we're much better off giving that roster spot to a younger, faster guy who can actually play the position competently instead of watching Will Smith halfheartedly dragging his fat ass around the field and pretending he's still worthwhile because he went to one Pro Bowl forever ago.

Trusting you has nothing to do with it... If that option were available do you think Smith would have been on the field to get hurt in the first place?

You are assuming Payton was playing Smith because.... ?

Re: Will Smith out for the Season

The questions remains: where does he do his rehab? In West Philadelphia where he was born and raised or does he move in with his auntie and uncle in Bel Air.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

He is a veteran and Martez/Junior have not been around.

I honestly don't think he would've made the final roster unless cutting him was cost-prohibitive (which is very possible). Jay freaking Richardson has outplayed him by a mile and he's been out of the league for the last 2 years.

Have you read any of my posts? Will smith costs us 7.8M in dead money if he is cut, we have 4M left in salary cap... Do the math... That is why I said he was not a talent loss but a warm body loss. Then you went on to laugh and explain how he lacks talent..

Ya think?:dunce:

Re: Will Smith out for the Season

I don't like he got hurt and thank him for the good years. I do think we keep certain players to long and after he slowed down we should have traded him or let him go. He could have helped containing the edge as OLB and ended up with a few sacks but beyond that nothing more.

Your point being?

Now he goes on IR, we don't have to cut him and take a dead money hit, and we can get a younger/faster player to take his spot if "warm bodies" are what you are worried about.

Not seeing the downside here.

Turrible. Just Turrible. Rob Ryan just can't freaking catch a break. Going to be interesting to see what Sean and Loomie do about it...if anything. It's a big opportunity for one of the younger guys, sure, but who?

I might think of putting Rufus in there, baptism by fire and see how he turns out, he looks the part but raw.

You fail to see the downside because you do not understand cap, or dead money.

"This includes a player that is on Injured Reserve (IR), Physically Unable to Perform (PUP), and the Practice Squad (PS). Practice Squad contracts are included in a team’s Salary Cap during the season except in certain situations where a practice squad player is signed to another team’s 53-man roster."

Yeah, whatever, I edited my post when I realized my mistake. It still doesn't make a difference.

I rarely ever post here, but I've seen the way you operate too many times and I'm done with it. Feel free to post in a less condescending manner in the future.

Obviously

Re: Will Smith out for the Season

This is not addition by subtraction as some would like to think. Will Smith was not going to be great at rushing the passer, in-fact he would have been bellow average, however the guy was great at stopping the run.

With this latest development I am interested to see if Wilson and Gallete get time in P4, I feel they should get 1 or two series.

Richardson has played well and I think we should see more of Martin, Johnson has played many snaps but has not made many plays.

I don't think Wilson will return until week one, or at least that's what I understood. His injury has a 4-6 week diagnosis, I can't see Payton risking further injury for a preseason game.

Re: Will Smith out for the Season

This isn't good at all. While Smith had become the new Shanle for a lot f fans fact still remains no coach will put a player in the starting lineup that he don't think gives the team the best chance to win. Obviously Smith was that guy at this point whether we fans agree or not.
I sure hope we have some young guys that can develop in a hurry.
