The Worst Defense in History

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; There was no "none of the above" selection ... I still maintain that in order to be considered the "Worst Defense in History" you have to have lost every single game. Only if, as a defense, you were never able ...

Only if, as a defense, you were never able to put your team/offense in a position to win/score can you be truly considered the "worst" defense.

Just my opinion.

You know... While I was driving and thinking about creating the poll that was my 4th option.. Then somewhere between the parking tower, work, and putting the poll up i had to come up with a new 4th option because that one had vanished.

Re: The Worst Defense in History

The 1981 Baltimore Colts were the worse defense in NFL history. They allowed 533 points, and went 2-14. Only 3 teams have allowed more then 500 points in a season. The New Orleans Saints may have gave up 7,000 yards, but yards don't win games. Points do. The Tennessee Titans had the worse defense in the NFL last year. Giving up 471 points, in comparison the 454 given up by the Saints.

Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta (in that order) gave up the least amount of points in the NFL last year. Those teams won a lot of games didn't they? Baltimore was ranked 10th, meaning they were a top 10 defense as well. Points allowed is the only stat that matters when we're talking about who's the best defense. So no, the Saints didn't have the worse defense ever.

The D was bad but I'm with SloMo, go ask the 7 teams we beat why they couldn't score more points against the worse D of all time. One game was an effin shutout for crying out loud 41 to 0.

Shutting the Buc's out
Holding Atl to 46 yards rushing in week 10
Holding Atl to 159 yards passing in week 13

Tells me we had the personnel to do a lot better than we did.

Tools were not used correctly. We have not shut anyone out since the Jets in 1995.

Re: The Worst Defense in History

It's all relative. Last year with us going into the fourth quarter and Charmichael putting the offense in easy chair mode, there was a damn good chance we were heading toward the L column. We sucked as bad as anyone anytime. We were the worst even with the D somehow knocking off one of the few shutouts in our history. And remember, history is written by the opinionated. Our defense won one, maybe two games last season, they lost almost all of the rest.

However, Dallas or Atlanta fielding a similar defense would make me think that was a good thing.

That's not true, the defense showed up in some of the later games. The offense was stalling. That D gave up what, 20 something points against ATL after 5 picks and 13 points from Brees? The defense wasn't good, not even a little, but a lot of people are over exaggerating.

I agree. And the 2012 Saints not only do not have that record (1981 Baltimore Colts gave up 533 points for a 33.3 PPG), they did not even give up the most points last season, as the titans gave up 477.

(Sorry Rezburna, I wrote this before I saw your excellent post!)

Re: The Worst Defense in History

We were the worst. Doesn't matter who or why- as long as we fix it this year.
