With AB getting closer to holding most of the saints records and a first playoff win, is he the best Saints QB?

Some will say Archie and some will say Brooks.

Archie threw more INts than TDs and never made it to the playoffs.

Brooks has superior stats and led this team to its only playoff victory.

In fairness to Archie, he played on terrible teams. It was far from being Archie\'s fault for the dismal record the Saints had.

And in fairness to Brooks, he\'s been on teams with a terrible defense along with many more problems.

There\'s never been ONE QB who has got his team to the superbowl by himself. Wins/loses don\'t define the QB position. If it did, then Archie would have at least had us in the playoffs. Archie did play with some probowl guys on offense. But his O-line and the defense was just terrible. Kinda like this years version of the Saints.

You noticed that, huh?

It\'s cool with me. It\'s just that I\'m a big Brooks\' supporter and they don\'t like that. And I call them on their anit-Brooks propaganda.

To hear some tell it ... if you support Brooks you\'re crazy.

Again, it\'s cool with me. I kind of encourage some of it. Makes things interesting. ;)

Everett wasn\'t the greatest QB ever, but we\'d have made the playoffs Ditka\'s first year if he\'d have kept Everett around. Otherwise...

It\'s terribly complicated to compare players from different NFL eras. I don\'t think you put up stats against stats in that situation and say one was better than another. I think the best clue as to who has been the Saints best QB is to look at how important each was to his team at the time and how long the team held on to him.

Using that criteria, I\'d have to go with Manning, for now.

It\'s been said many times on here that wins are all that matters when it comes to a QB. Now, in no way do I believe that and I don\'t think any sane person believes that.

But if you do, that leaves Archie out and make Hebert the best Saints QB ever.

Or if you go by \"BIG\" wins, that makes Brooks the best ever. He won the biggest game in Saints history.

I watched Archie play and he was very good. He also threw more ill advised INTs than Brooks has ever thought about throwing.

It really comes down to personal preferance. Archie sure didn\'t do anything that could be considered great.

Unless you call never having a winning season and throwing 125 TDs and 171 INTS great.

Brooks has \"one off year\" because of a bad line and he gets a free pass, even though he has the best talent in Saints history around him.

Archie was the only player the Saints had during his time, and he is crap. Does Brooks pay you to be so blindly in love with him? It\'s scary. Seriously.

I think you\'re a little misinformed. Archie was not the only good player when he was with the Saints. You should check your facts before making statements.

Have you ever heard of Chuck Munsie or Tony Galbreath? They were called \"Thunder and Ligtening.\"

The internet wil provide you with some info. on those 2-players as well as the rest of the Saints roster with Manning.

I suppose you don\'t know too much about the Saints back then.

One question, how bad was the o-line in front of Archie? Prob the worst in history. OH but I forgot, that only works for Brooks. ROFLMAO!!!

No doubt in my mind, Dave Wilson. He\'s the only one I know that could fall down in the Super Dome with no one chasing him. But he was one hell of a nice guy.

Thank you, someone finally mentions Bobby Hebert. Not a superb athlete, but he could control the rhythm of the game and not make stupid mistakes.

JoeSam you are wrong about the falling down. Stabler did it for a safety against the Cowboys. He was on the ground for 5 seconds before a Dallas player got close enough to tag him down.

DeBerce, Bobby Hebert was the BIGGEST whiner in the league until Jeff George came along. talk about locker room cancers! he constantly blamed everyone around him for failures even as he was throwing the ball ten feet over receivers\' heads or five feet in front of them into the turf. He would then sulk into the huddle and openly scream at them for their \"mistakes\".
Hebert was a #itch!
\"Cajun Cannon\" my a##!
He was another \"Hometown Boy\" that people were in love with for that reason only.
I remember those days very well. While I will make no apologies for the current Saints offense, they are light years ahead of past teams.

Personally, I loved the Billy Joes (Tolliver,Hobert).
There was no QB controversy. They were equal.

One isn\'t performing this week? Put in the other and he won\'t either.

I\'m surprised nobody has mentioned John Fourcade. He holds the Saints record for highest passer rating in a season: http://www.neworleanssaints.com/cust...gename=Passing

:D

I was trying to find out his all-time win-loss percentage, but I couldn\'t. I think he was 2-1 as a starter in the strike games.

1)Archie Manning (2-time pro bowler `78, `79)

2)Brooks (AB could be #1, but right now Archie is still the king)

3)Hebert- ( even though he couldn`t throw deep with accuracy, he was solid, consistent and played with passion)

I think in order for a majority vote on this where we can all agree or most agree on you have to set the standards... stats alone? important victories? what the player brought to the team? or your favorite qb by your heart?

Brooks
Manning
Hebert

Manning
Brooks

What I do remember about Fourcade is that he came in as a starter for the last three games of one season, and won all three of those games. It wasn\'t enough to get the Saints into the playoffs, but it was enough to earn Hebert an extra 50K or something due to a clause he had in his contract that stated that if we won a certain amount of games, I think it was ten, that he would get this extra money. I guess the front office blew it on this one by not adding that he had to be the starter for those games....lol.

I can\'t say that I am anti-Brooks but the man is so inconsistent, and when Archie Manning Played he didn\'t have the supporting cast that Brooks has. Half of Mannings interceptions were due to errors on the receivers part. I must give Arron Brooks credit though he does have the only playoff win in franchise history.

In 1979, when the Saints logged their first non-losing season ever of 8-8 behind Manning, Muncie, Galbreath, Wes Chandler, Ike Harris, and Henry Childs, the team ranked 6th in the league in rushing yardage (2474 yds), 4th in the league in yards per carry (4.49 ypc), and 1st in the league in rushing TDs (28) behind an offensive line featuring Conrad Dobler, John Hill, Emanuel Zanders, among others. Somebody must have been blocking somebody, because Manning was only sacked 17 times all season.

Manning, by the way, threw 15 TDs and 20 INTs that season...and still went to the Pro Bowl.

Do we place an artificially high threshold for success for Brooks to reach, or do we just have very selective memory?

Oh.....Manning\'s other Pro Bowl season came the year before, in 1978...when he threw 17 TDs and 16 INTs. I\'m not saying Archie wasn\'t courageous and valiant and athletically gifted--not to mention one of the all-time nice guys--but he easily made just as many bone-headed decisions with the ball as Aaron Brooks does now.

Well as far as athletiscism yes. I think Quarterback instincts Brooks brings a big question mark. Well I must say Brooks is getting closer to the Archie Mannings record of most touchdownpasses as a Saint with 11 ,Brooks has 107. Another argument can be made that the Saints of the Manning era did not have as much talent at certain key positions. Well not to mention Brooks had his second worst qb rating with 79.5 this year.

Random thoughts on the subject -- Lets be clear here - there was one year that the Saints had the most explosive offense in the league -- 4 Offensive players made it to the pro bowl -- Archie Manning -- a man know as Wes Chandler -- Cocaine Chuck Mucnie -- Henry Childs as tight end and Tong G as a second starter at fullback. That year Archie played fantastic -- we didn\'t make the playoffs mainly because of the last game versus Oakland -- Snake Stabler threw 4 4th quarter TDs to beat the Saints 42-35. So Archie did have talent one year and played superbly. Now lets move to Brooks -- what is meant by by who is the better QB. Physical talent wise no doubt Brooks -- mentally, football smarts -- no doubt archie -- Now lets turn to stats -- very unfair top rank him on stats -- Less games per season played -- qbs and wide receivers did not have the same protection offered by the refs as they do now (which really opens up offenses). I could go on. In my mind -- Archie was the greatest Saint QB -- He stayed in New Orleans and played his heart out --- lets wait and see on Brooks ---

As I said.....the year was 1979, and Manning went to the Pro Bowl after throwing 15 TDs and 20 INTs.

Personally, it\'s my opinion that Archie Manning had a good bit more athletic ability than Aaron Brooks has--and that\'s based on personal observation of both\'s exploits on the field. Not to mention that Manning was a pretty fair left-handed hitting shortstop at Ole Miss. Everyone always wants Brooks to run more often, but I really don\'t think he\'s that much of a threat (pretty much average to slightly above as NFL QBs go) running the ball--he\'s not all that fast, he\'s not shifty at all, and he certainly doens\'t have the body makeup to run through tackles. Manning had him beat on all of those counts. The other thing Manning did better than Brooks was throw on the run. What I feel Brooks doesn better than Manning did is sit back in the pocket (when there is one) and deliver the ball downfield accurately. Like it or not, we have to accept the fact that Manning, even in his best years, threw the ball to the wrong team an inordinate amount of times. Certainly more consistantly than Brooks has over his career so far.

What, no love for Weurfel from you guys??!!

lol

Brooks has flashes of brilliance but then on the other hand at times he shows off a perpensity for making overwhelmingly stupid plays.
