BMG, why you always gots to be so smart!

You knew what I meant, and so did those guys. ;)

Mutey, a good stance. I favor that myself.

Danno,

None of Vick, Culpepper, or McNabb were selected in the 5th round. So, while some things sound the same among them and McPherson, there is one key difference: teams believed that Vick, Culpepper, and McNabb would be good strongly enough to make them 1st round picks - not so for McPherson.

Don\'t get me wrong, I would love for McPherson to be our McNabb, but the evidence just isn\'t there... yet.
I think you misunderstood.
I said I think he has similar skills. Take away the troubles and he MAY have been a 1st/2nd rounder. I never said he was the next Vick/McNabb/Culpepper. But he\'s got almost as much upside as all 3.

..hmmm..

..actually, Billy has a point... even if it is intertwined with some protectiveness of AB... we always talk about character, and how knowledge of the QB position outweighs physical talent...

You guys go around preaching how important \"character\" and \"leadership\" is but I haven\'t heard either one of those mentioned in this thread. Or mentioned about anyone in the entire draft.

Actually Billy, I did bring it up in this thread about McPherson. ;) We actually agree here. This guy still has HUGE question marks around him in my mind.

All of this speculation and excitement, IMO, is based mainly on the fact that mnay people are simply fed up with Brooks. I, for one, think McPherson is going to have to do a lot to prove himself in camp, preseason, and this season and on before I call him the next big thing.... or even the starter. AB is the starting QB of the Saints until someone else proves otherwise. I\'m hopeful that McPherson can use his talent to be the QB many of us thought AB was going to be 4 years ago. Until that time, he\'s a fifth round QB with great talent and questionable INTANGIBLES and CHARACTER. Billy is right. :o

as long as we can get someone to write checks for him, he might turn out ok...

of all the qb\'s left out there that we could ahve picked up maybe a round earlier, we get the guy who was kicked out of college....

talk about par for the saints...

This pick got me really excited. I mean....to get anybody that is familiar name in the 5th round is amazing. This is THE thing for Saint\'s fans to talk about during the offseason....the new conversation topic.

Great pick just for the fans. I prey that he actually gets a chance here, instead of being pushed aside for Brooks only to do great somewhere else (like Jake and Mark).

I think that having a real prospect at back-up can only have an upside. Granted, Macpherson is not Rivers and Brooks is not Brees, but this dynamic will only raise the production levels at the QB position.

2005 season prediction?

LOTS of offence......... We\'ll have to see what shapes up for the D.

I don\'t see any reason to believe that the drafting of McPherson will change Brooks behavior one bit. During the time Brooks has been here, Bouman has been brough in presumably to play if necessary, and such heros as JT O\'Sullivan and Jake Delhomme were here - same ol\' AB.

Read an article today that stated the Saints scouted McPherson for over a year. And were ecstatic he fell to the 5th round and they still got him. Seems like you have plans for a guy who has been out of college football for a year yet you still continue to scout him that deeply.

Forward thinking from the Saints? I too, thought this was noteworthy.

Look...I realize that the QB is the headiest position on the team. There are many layers to making a man a great QB and it would be unrealistic to think AMAC will play like manning this year. If we had taken him in the 2nd (not that our 2nd pick made any sense) this draft could have really been called into question. Guys picked in this slot are usually practice squadders. I have heard several say that he would have been a niner without all the red flags.

Yes, there are concerns here, but he\'s late rounder and there is no risk here. You cut bait if he doesn\'t work out after a couple of years.

Here aer my reasons for optimism:

1) stayed at home with the parents for the draft. people from tight families are more likely to dust themselves off. it\'s the guys that don\'t have dads or hate their mothers that end up going nuts. this all makes me feel better about the young guy who acted up theory. he is saying th right things. is it lip service? only one way to find out.

2) took some lumps and had to play arena ball. a humbling experience that could very well build character and quick reaction time.

3) I don\'t care what level you are playing at i think the numbers from FSU and the AFL are: 79 TDs and 6 Ints. (Check my numbers, but it\'s something like that.) This makes me feel like he\'s not an uncontrolled big arm who makes safe throws.
