New Orleans Saints fans likely had two goals in mind on Super Bowl Sunday:

1.) Show the world how to party (not pout), even if your favorite team missed a Super Bowl berth in large part because of one of the worst officiating gaffes in NFL history.

2) Send a message to the NFL that the city would, in fact, work together to make its sincere disinterest in Super Bowl 53 known by trying to suppress local television ratings.

TV ratings for the Super Bowl, which ended with the New England Patriots defeating the Los Angeles Rams, 13-3, in a contest that was largely mocked on social media for its lack of excitement, were historically low.

A Sports Business Journal report said the overnight rating was a 44.9 nationally on CBS, the lowest since a 42.1 in the 2009 Super Bowl pitting the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Arizona Cardinals.

In New Orleans, a 26.1 rating marked once of the city's lowest ratings for a Super Bowl ever, one report said.

In recent years, New Orleans has been one of the highest-metered TV markets for the Super Bowl in the country with ratings ranging from the high-40 to mid-50s. The ratings represent the percentage of televisions tuned in to a program. The share is the percentage of televisions on at the time that watched.

2018: Patriots vs. Eagles; 53.0 local rating

2017: Patriots vs. Falcons, 48.4 local rating

2016: data n/a

2015: Patriots vs. Seahawks, 55.7 local rating

2014: Seahawks vs. Broncos, 53.9 local rating

2013: Ravens vs. 49ers (in New Orleans): 57.1 local rating

2010: Saints vs. Colts, 56.3 local rating (with an 82 share)

Of Nielsen's 56 top TV markets, New Orleans ranks No. 51 just ahead of Providence-New Bedford and just behind Memphis in terms of homes with TVs.

Keep this in mind, too: When it comes to Super Bowl ratings, nothing tops it. For example, last year's Super Bowl between the Patriots and Eagles pulled in an average of more than 104 million total viewers for a rating that was 250 percent higher than the No. 2 show on the list — the NFC title game from two weeks previous.

Of the 10 highest-rated television programs in U.S. history, nine were Super Bowls and one was the finale of "M.A.S.H."

Well, we may not have hurt the ratings(the NFL did that to themselves) but we showed the world that we are united and know how to throw down while representing New Orleans with pride!

Well if you have a team (Rams) that shouldn't have been in the SB ... low scoring contest aside - the "Integrity" of the shield is destroyed, interest will diminish.

Seems like that idea is still lost on the League office, beancounters can't account for "vague concepts"...

In an unrelated story, Monday morning in the Greater New Orleans area showed the highest no show rate at work since the Saints last won the Superbowl in 2009.

Los Angeles isn’t getting behind the Rams the way cities usually get behind winning football teams.

In fact, the L.A. market actually had a lower television rating for the Super Bowl than the country as a whole. According to Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal, the Los Angeles market had a 44.6 overnight rating, which is actually lower than the 44.9 overnight rating for the country as a whole.

It’s just about unheard of, not only for the Super Bowl but for any sporting event, for the market of one of the two teams in the game to get a lower rating than the country as a whole. (For comparison, Boston had a 57.4 overnight rating.)

The good news for the NFL is, that 44.6 overnight rating was the highest in Los Angeles for a Super Bowl since 1996. And the NFL badly wants to see interest in football increase in Los Angeles, because it’s the second-biggest market in America. Los Angeles has 5.3 million television households while St. Louis has 1.2 million, and that’s why the Rams moved back to Los Angeles from St. Louis. Even if the people who live in St. Louis, on average, care more about football than the people who live in Los Angeles.

Different set of values there in LA. Foreign immigrants would rather support baseball, basketball, soccer.

Relocated state to state immigrants in the show business industry either don't care for sports, especially the most alpha-male of sports, football, or have other interests like musicals and fashion runway...

There are some great folks there, but as a whole, are we really surprised that the most team-oriented sport doesn't have a large draw in the most narcissisitic city in the country?!?
