Top 5 Defense or Top 5 Offense ???

Top 5 defense or Top 5 offense ????

Which do you build around first in this Salary cap era ???

Now there are those who say :

Defense, folks. Defense.
But to lean your cap room towards the defensive side of the ball , let's see how that has worked out .

NFL .com list the following Top 5 defenses :

1. Pittsburgh
2. Buffalo
3. Washington
4. Denver
5. Tampa Bay

3 out of 5 of the teams having a top 5 defense failed to make the play offs last year . That is less then a 50 / 50 chance if you spend heavily on the defensive side of the ball .

Now let's look at the top 5 offenses

1. Kansas City
2. Indianapolis
3. Green Bay
4. Minnesota
5. Denver

5 out of 5 of the teams with a Top 5 offense made the play offs last year .

Tell ya what , let's broaden our list and see if that helps those defense minded people ??

Top 10 Defense

1. Pittsburgh
2. Buffalo
3. Washington
4. Denver
5. Tampa Bay
6. Baltimore
7. New York (A)
8. Miami
9. New England
10. Philadelphia

Well now that evens the chances out , 5 out of 10 teams with a top 10 defense made the play offs .

Top 5 Offense

1. Kansas City
2. Indianapolis
3. Green Bay
4. Minnesota
5. Denver
6. St. Louis
7. New England
8. Seattle
9. Philadelphia
10. San Diego

10 out of 10 teams made the play offs with a top 10 offense . That is 100%folks .

Guess those numbers speak for themselves .....

RE: Top 5 Defense or Top 5 Offense ???

Try comparing that per year, and also tell me who went on past the first round the best offense or defense. Who 99.99999% usually wins it all the best offense or defense?
The point is , on which side of the ball would you build a top 5 team and then start building the other side of the ball .

Let's check 2003

Top 5 defense

1. Dallas
2. Buffalo
3. Baltimore
4. Denver
5. Tampa Bay

3 out of 5 would go to the play offs

Top 5 Offense

1. Minnesota
2. Kansas City
3. Indianapolis
4. Green Bay
5. San Francisco

3 out of 5 would go to the play offs

Play offs and the Super Bowl are as much about coaching and breaks as anything , if not the Denver Broncos should have won it all in 2004 .....

The point is to get to the play offs and let the games be played .

I would have to go with...Defense folks. Defense.

Simply because I'd like to see us win a Superbowl.

I think I read this somewhere before.
Should I put you on the mailing list ??

:P

By the way , that was eliminating the Saints in that so called worst defense ranking .

Baltimore, Tampa , NE, Rams. Last 4 champs and only two of them(STL and NE) had top 10 offenses. All of them had top 10 defenses. END of DISCUSSION!!!

END of DISCUSSION!!!
Actually the Beginning of the Discussion .

I knew someone would use the Ravens and Bucs .

Which leads me into the next point , Both the Ravens and Bucs are 1 hit wonders to the big show . While teams like the Rams and Pats are repeaters , throw in a handfull of other teams like Denver and the 49ers . You might see that these were teams that knew how to put the points on the board and play a good defense . Pats defense actually slips last year and they still repeat , with the higher rated offense .

What you say is true...but still the 49ers, Denver and Pats
Defense was playing some damn good Defense when they
Offense was putting points on the board.
