LSU gets commitment from Texas QB
Posted by The Times-Picayune
From staff reports August 21, 2007 LSU has addressed a recruiting priority with a commitment from quarterback Darron Thomas of Aldine High School in Houston. Thomas, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior, is the first quarterback and the fourth Texan to pick LSU, which has 16 commitments. With three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, LSU coaches have targeted several prospects nationwide at that position. Thomas, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds, said he selected LSU instead of Southern California and Florida. He also considered Miami, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Rice, Northwestern and Purdue. Although he could project as a safety or wide receiver, Thomas would prefer that his initial tryout be under center. "LSU told me I would have a shot at it (quarterback)," Thomas said. "But I am not really worried about a particular position. I like LSU's location, and I have always liked the school since I was a kid. On my trip there for summer camp, they blew me away. I really liked Coach (Les) Miles and Coach (Gary) Crowton." As a junior at the Class 5A school, Thomas completed 77 of 141 passes for 905 yards and six touchdowns with four interceptions. He rushed for 499 yards on 90 carries and scored 10 touchdowns. "(Florida Coach) Urban Meyer and (Southern California Coach) Pete Carroll both looked at film of Darron here and asked, 'Why are we not recruiting this guy?' " Aldine Coach Bob Jones said. "Both offered him. He has a funky throwing motion at times, but his arms are long and his throwing arm is very strong. "He has some Vince Young-type abilities, and he can run like a deer." Thomas is academically qualified with a 3.3 grade-point average. "I committed early so that I can be focused on the team instead of worrying about phone calls," he said.
