Re: Bower out at Southern Miss
Here are some reason I feel he got the boot.
1. USF, UL, Cincy have all been ranked in the top 25 this year and last year; USF as high as #2. While USM used to beat these teams when they were in conference USA, and now they these teams have moved on to bigger "BCS" conferences USM has just stayed the course pulling a .650 season out year after year. 2. Not winning the conference title. BIG REASON (This one is fact and not opinion) 3. I know most of you guys may not be familiar with USM but a WHOLE.. no scratch that, a SH*TLOAD of MONEY has been dumped into the football program and just winning isn't going to cut it with the "money men" anymore. As the stadium sits right now it will hold 33,000 people. with the renovations being done to the stadium they will get closer to 50,000. They want butts in the seats, and "Bower Ball" ain't gonna fill'em. A couple of years ago they installed that fancy new turf on the field (USM had it before Ole'Miss, MS State, and before most NFL teams to include the Saints), they built a NICE Athletic department building (which might as well be the FOOTBALL building), TWO new scoreboards, and a new practice field. USM is not an LSU by any means. But the people putting money out for all this nice stuff (and yes, it is nice) want results (PERIOD). I hate it for Coach Bower. He is a really nice guy and I think he did a hell of a job. I just hope this doesn't come back to bite us in the butt. Goodbye Coach, we'll miss ya. "Go Eagles!" |

Re: Bower out at Southern Miss
Well, my girlfriend is inconsolable. She loves Bower. But I do see the reasoning. They had what many thought was the best team in the last decade and they went 7-5. By all reports, he ran off that blue chip RB from Miami - he may have just been a punk, though.
Bower has been ineffective in recent years - since Tyrone Nix left. I think it was probably the right decision in the long run. I just hoped they'd have a successor ready to come in. Now I hear rumors of Mike Dubose, who's done a fine job at Millsaps, and even Nix has been mentioned, but I'm not sure either of those guys are going to give you that Boise State season. PS - The Girlfriend wants Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin...I just thought that was funny. Thanks for the info, Sapper. |
