LSU Coach Les Miles confirms five more players out for 2012
LSU football Coach Les Miles confirmed Wednesday that linebackers Tahj Jones and D.J. Welter, tight end Tyler Edwards and offensive lineman Evan Washington will not play in 2012 but would not give a reason. It brings to 11 the number of Tigers lost to attrition since the start of fall camp.
Tyler Edwards is one of four LSU players academically ineligible in 2012. A source close to LSU's program told the Times Picayune Tuesday that the four players were academically ineligible. Speaking on the SEC coaches teleconference, Miles said he was not at liberty to say why, citing privacy issues. "I don't know that it's fair for me to confirm that,"Miles said of academics being the reason. "There's a privacy responsibility. Those guys will not play this year. I don't know that I can tell you the specifics as to why and why not." He also added that sophomore defensive end Jordan Allen is out for the season with an injury. He was hurt on a kickoff in Saturday's 41-3 victory against Washington. Miles said before the season opener Sept. 1 that Jones and running back Michael Ford were appealing their academic status. Ford's issues were apparently cleared up as he has played in both games this season. Jones was the only player of the four who was a starter. He has been replaced in the lineup by junior Luke Muncie for the Tigers first two games. Jones and Edwards were not listed on LSU's gameday roster Saturday, but Welter and Washington were. The loss of those five brings LSU's total of available scholarship players to 74. That's one of the main reason 13 true freshmen have seen action in the first two games and the number who redshirt will likely be the lowest in Miles' tenure. Incoming freshman recruits Avery Johnson and Jeremy Liggins, and junior college transfer Fehoko Fanaika did not qualify academically and were unable to enroll for the fall semester. Miles kicked Tyrann Mathieu off the team Aug. 10, while junior offensive tackle Chris Faulk and freshman wide receiver Travin Dural are also out for the season with injuries. Read More | |

I don't think any of these guys are starting this year anyway.
Miles knew the linebackers would be ineligible and didn't play them, but gave them time pending an academic appeal. Obviously they lost the grade appeal. |
