LSU regional field set, with ULL, Sam Houston State and Jackson State headed to Baton Rouge

The party is set for LSU. And the visitors coming don't have to travel far for the NCAA Tournament, especially one in-state neighbor.

After winning the SEC Tournament with a stirring 5-4 11-inning win over Vanderbilt, the Tigers earned the No. 4 national seed for the tournament, which starts Friday.

Headed to Baton Rouge: Louisiana-Lafayette (41-17), Sam Houston State (37-20) and Jackson State (34-20).

The first-round matchups are LSU vs. Jackson State at 2 p.m. Friday, and ULL vs. Sam Houston at 7 p.m. All games in the regional will be broadcast on the ESPN networks.

The subplot that immediately jumps off the page, of course, is postseason baseball between the Tigers and Ragin' Cajuns. That last happened in 2002 on a weekend that got spicy.

Known then as Southwestern Louisiana, the Cajuns beat LSU 5-0 in the second round of an all in-state regional before the Tigers roared back for consecutive 12-2 victories. Tempers flared in the final two games, leading to a cessation of the series until a few years ago.

ULL comes to Baton Rouge with an RPI of 23 after a solid season. The Cajuns tied for third place in the Sun Belt Conference with a 19-11 mark and played in the conference tournament title game, falling to Florida Atlantic 16-8.

Before LSU can think about ULL -- or Southland Conference regular-season champ Sam Houston for that matter -- there's business to tend to against Jackson State.

The SWAC champion Tigers have been one of the top programs in that league, along with Southern, for several seasons and enter the tournament well-tested.
JSU went 19-5 during the regular season in league play and cruised to the tournament crown. Mixed in were games against Central Arkansas, Kansas, Troy, Missouri and Southeastern Louisiana.

On the flip side, Jackson State was 0-8 in those games and won six games against lowly Alcorn State.

I like LSU.

Their fans tend to be fair weather, whiners however.
Merely speaking from experiences. Seen it with my own eyes,
so it isn't a debate. They're a bunch of yuppies, for the most part.

Awesome sports program. Whiner fan base, but not entirely. Just MOSTLY.
