this is a discussion within the College Community Forum; Just curious, if the left is successful in College becoming "free", will the NCAA do away with scholarships? Will it result in overt payment of players?...

Re: So if College becomes "free"...
I thought the proposal was for JUCO...
Being from France, I've alway thought colleges, other than private ones, ought to be free. The caveat is that a young person must commit the same number of years they went to college to public service in return, whether military, peace corps, or whatever. They already do that for certain professions anyway. But to answer the OP, it may just open Pandora's box.

Re: So if College becomes "free"...
I do not think colleges should be free. No way. University education is a WANT. It is not a need.
This is a place people WANT to be and people WANT to do something. I do not get some of you guys who are totally Conservatives. You sound like a real Liberal there. That sounds so Liberal. Free colleges!!! Where does it stop! I used to work with some really Conservative girls, we got along great by the way, but I sounded far more Conservative the they did. I am Moderate ..Independent... in politics. I do not even vote even more. Conservative with money, crime, values, etc. Liberal on your choice, your decision ,and so then deal with it on your own. Free colleges would bring down the universities. Bad enough you have students in public high schools who are just there. At least in elementary, you can try to reach them. Turn their path to the right way. You do not need people in universities who are just there, killing some time... There are ways for people who take loans to pay them off or pay a far lesser amount by doing things involving working in inner city places. Title I schools, you can pay off a lesser amount or something. I have heard some school teachers do this. I knew of a dentist who had her loans reduced or moreso by working some hours at jail. Free dental care for prisoners. Lord have mercy!! I am glad she had that chance to greatly reduce her loans or more, but dental care for prisoners paid by Yours Truly (Me, You, We taxpayers) is just stupid. |

Re: So if College becomes "free"...
free college?
WTH lets get this screwed up education system fixed first before talking secondary level. mid twenties ranking world wide among developed countries is a long fall from the 1960s when we were #1. add in under developed countries and we drop bit further. right now in the global market place we produce janitors. Republicans did not fix it. Democrats did not fix it. they both screwed it up. we need to model the schools like the ones in country were it works. secondary education is not where you go to finish off what you should have learned by high school. free college is yet another cop out to not make the sweeping changes need to the education system as a whole. all it will be a post secondary high school for 80% of the population attending. |

On another note, tenure needs to go for some of the pompous incompetent professors out there.
