LA Gov threatens LSU season (tax hikes or else)

Louisiana Dem Gov. Edwards warns: Agree to proposed tax hikes or LSU football could be sacked

Louisiana Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards is suggesting the legendary Louisiana State University football team’s 2016 season might be canceled -- and other doomsday consequences -- unless the GOP-legislature swiftly passes a package of tax increases to help close a looming $940 million budget shortfall.

Edwards, who took office just last month, made the suggestions Thursday night in a rare, state-wide TV address.

Among the worst-case scenarios, he said, is that college campuses would be forced to close in April, resulting in student-athletes receiving grades of “incomplete” on their report card, making them ineligible for the fall 2016 season.

"That means you can say farewell to college football next fall," Edwards said in the address.

The warning about the LSU Tigers football program, which has won three national championships, captured most of the headlines.

But Edwards’ additional warnings about potential deep cuts to health care and other public services rattled Louisiana residents as well as Republicans and others in the state legislature, which will convene in a rare Sunday session to address the budget issue.

"Gov. Edwards is proposing to implement the largest tax increase in the history of Louisiana," state GOP Treasurer John Kennedy said in a televised response to the Edwards' address. "It will wreck our economy, already fragile."

Edwards’ tax package includes nine proposed hikes including increases on sales and personal income taxes.

The governor’s office said Thursday the budget gap for this fiscal year, which ends June 30, has now reached $940 million. And the state purportedly will face a $2 billion shortall when the new budget begins July 1.

Edwards also suggested that cuts to higher education would hurt all Louisiana families beyond just the possible shuttering of campuses, saying the state's popular TOPS college scholarships could run out of money.

He also appeared to suggest Thursday that state GOP lawmakers and others should be giving more immediate attention to the budget and his plan to cut services and increase taxes to resolve the shortfalls.

"These are not scare tactics,” Edwards said. “This is reality."
Scare tactics at its best

I think you over-estimate the IQ of the average Louisiana (and American) voter.

I'd say well over half of voters are OK with raising taxes, as long as politicians claim its only a tax increase on the rich.

The problem is that tax payers are to ignorant to know that the 2nd easiest way to raise taxes on the POOR is to claim that its a tax increase on the RICH.

That's the Democrat version of trickle down economics.

Re: LA Gov threatens LSU season (tax hikes or else)

Here are a few numbers. I graduated from McNeese back in 1974. At that time tuition cost was ridiculously low; less than $500 a year.

Today one year of McNeese and LU in-state, full time tuition and fees runs about $7,000.

My youngest daughter recently graduated from Miami University (Ohio not Florida). Today one year of in-state, full time tuition and fees runs about $15,000.

Louisiana State colleges and universities have an enrollment of over 150,000. Raising tuition by $3,000 per year would generate almost $500 million a year, about half of LA's budget shortfall. Bet the gov doesn't want to suggest that option to raise revenue.

An even bigger problem is that many people enrolled in colleges today are there to get the education that they should have received in high school. That is the real fleecing of America.

”It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” Charles Darwin

Re: LA Gov threatens LSU season (tax hikes or else)

My dad and I had a good laugh about this over the phone the other day. There is ZERO chance anything happens to LSU football. A self sustaining program that has donated millions into the university. LSU, like all major Programs, is almost an economy unto itself. Huge revenue. LSU receives zero state funding. To bring it up is stupid on two levels.

One, you don't create revenue by cutting revenue. And two, you don't single out something as big as the state's flagship university to try to make a point. It makes you look like a worm. We all know what you're doing, John, and it isn't fooling anyone with a brain.

But of course, there were a lot of brain dead people who voted for him. That's America for you.

At first I was thinking, "Why would anyone care if they cancelled Yale football?", but they got quite a legacy! 27 National Championships, 885 wins, third only to University of Michigan and Notre Dame ... ddaayyuumm! Go Bulldogs!
