...and those who are currently serving.

My father was in the Navy for 6 years in the '50's. He then went on to serve in the army for another 20 years. He fought in Korea and in Vietnam. He passed away a few years ago and his proudest achievement was serving his country. He was buried with military honors in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

We have members, current and past, of the armed forces that post here. Let's all recognize those people, and the other's that we know. Those that we see in our everyday lives that go without our thank you's every day.

Today is their day. If you know a vet, you DO approach them and say thank you. Hug them. Shake their hand. Ask about their experiences, and listen. Those men and women are owed a debt greater than we can ever repay.

My moms grandfather was a fighter pilot in WW1, shot down a german airplane. Landed and took the Iron cross off the germans pilots body. I still have it.

My Dad was in Vietnam, but army logistic and diplomacy.
My Dads 2 brothers and 1 sister died in WW2 , he was too young, she was in the red cross. His sister died during a bombing raid and his 2 brothers in africa. His other brother my uncle bucky landed on D-day as a radio operator. Back then they trained with their high school class, he watched them all get shot up. He was on omaha beach. Told me a lot of stories.

Bucky made it 1/2 way up the beach and was hit with machine gun fire. He gave me a cigarette case they gave to the GI's with a map of france on the back, still have it.

After he was fixed up they shipped him to the Pacific, where he fought in Okinawa, Manila, etc..
He came back from the war, threw everything in a closet and never let anyone open it. The rest of his life was spent as a taxi driver in Washington D.C and drinking his butt off.

I'll agree with you on this SF. All who live in this country (and many who live outside of it) owe our Veterans thanks. Two flags are flying in front of my house today; the Stars and Stripes and the Black and Gold fleur-de-lis (Old Glory being higher of course).

My Dad was a Marine in WW2 in the South Pacific and never really talks about it all that much. I don't blame him.

That is him in the lower center with the huge smile. I have the same crows feet from smiling too much. It is genetic.


He is the last remaining soldier alive from his platoon. Mr Frank passed recently...
