Assistant and former player Kevin Ollie will succeed the 70-year-old Calhoun and be given a one-year contract, according to the same person, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition on anonymity because a formal announcement has not been made. The one-year contract for Ollie is seen as a compromise. Calhoun has wanted Ollie to succeed him, but the school wanted to make him interim coach.
Calhoun is third among active coaches with a record of 873-380, including a stint at Northeastern. The Hall of Famer's retirement was first reported by NBC Connecticut.
Calhoun has coached the Huskies to three national championships. His last title came in 2011. UConn also won crowns in 1999 and 2004 and made the Final Four in 2009.
The last few years of Calhoun's tenure have not been smooth. UConn is banned from participating in the 2013 NCAA tournament because of sub-par Academic Progress Rate scores, something which could be pushing Calhoun toward retirement. UConn became the first team from one of the six major conferences to face a postseason ban in either men's basketball or football because of its APR scores. The Huskies' score fell below the mandated cutline of 900 for a rolling four-year period.
