New Orleans prosecutor pleads not guilty to public drunkenness on Mardi Gras

An Orleans Parish assistant district attorney, arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly being drunk in public and interfering with a police officer, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Municipal Court.

Matthew Kirkham was arrested on the two municipal misdemeanors Wednesday morning in the waning hours of Mardi Gras celebrations, WWL-TV first reported on Wednesday. He was released on a municipal summons.

Records summarizing the events that led to his arrest were not available Thursday from the Municipal Court clerk. City law forbids anyone from appearing "in a public place manifestly under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or other drugs ... to the degree that he may endanger himself or other persons or property."

Kirkham on Thursday was scheduled for trial on March 27.

District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro told the television station Wednesday that he intends to review the situation and consider disciplinary action.

Spokesman Christopher Bowman did not immediately respond to a request for additional information on Thursday afternoon.
