To Toll, or Not To Toll?

That is the question!

Crescent City Connection tolls suspended after judge throws out election

Crescent City Connection tolls have been suspended, after Tuesday's decision by a Baton Rouge judge that threw out last fall's referendum continuing the tolls for 20 years. State Rep. Pat Connick, R-Harvey, said that he has spoken with transportation officials, who are in the process of developing a "deactivation plan.''

Crescent City Connection tolls were suspended starting Tuesday at 6 p.m.
David Grunfeld, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune Connick, a critic of CCC operations, said that personnel were waving drivers through the toll plaza.
The state Department of Transportation and Development said in a statement the staff will cease collecting tolls at 6 p.m.

"DOTD will continue to work on long-term plans for the dissolution of the CCC,'' the statement said.

The tolls, which generate nearly $22 million annually, were set to expire Dec. 31, but voters approved a 20-year extension in the contentious November election that was thrown out by Judge William Morvant of the 19th Judicial District on Tuesday. A special election on the toll referendum has now been ordered for May 4 for voters in Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes.

Connick said the job now is to make sure that money collected since the beginning of the year stays on the West Bank.

"I want to make sure we get our fair share,'' he said.
