Re: Google Interns Gone Wild
You know the thing about Google - The salaries for "most" people there are better than average perhaps, but not crazy over the top like many people think. True, the high achievers do very VERY well, but the perks, man, the perks. If you work at Google, say, as a single kid out of college, there is no need in the world for you to have a grocery bill. Transportation to and from work, for the most part, at many offices, is taken care of, and so SO much more.
When I was there (2006-2009) they built us a 2 million dollar office, catered lunch and there was always plenty left over for dinner for anyone who wanted it. My trips to the Irvine office and to Mountain View (the mother ship) just blew me completely away. They move these kids directly from college to what is essentially a paid for version of more of the same. The winter ski trips were straight out of the movies with ice sculptures, dancing girls in cages, themed rooms, really over the top stuff. It was truly an experience I'll never forget. It was also annoying because Google frequently fails and often it's because it can't get out of its own way, but they make SO MUCH FREAKING MONEY they just absorb it and move on. Our project, for example, was making over 1 million a month, ON AUTO PILOT, but Eric shut it down because they were in search of the next BILLION DOLLAR project. I can honestly say it was the best of times and the worst of times. Very lucrative. Very honored to have worked there. Also very frustrating on many levels. |
C'mon Man...
