Re: What Are You Reading?
These are the ones I made it through this year - I only got started in the summer. I used to love reading. Riding the stupid stoopid BART train has helped me rekindle it, so it's all good.
Missing are my Paul McCartney bio which is on loan and a book on Java programming because I never finished it because it made me sleepy and angry. |

Re: What Are You Reading?
I just finished the third book in the 'Unwind' trilogy. They are teen books, but I like to keep up on what my students are reading, and these are well crafted and not about vampires.
They take place in a dystopian society (like all young fiction nowadays). The act of 'unwinding' is cultivating organs and all usable parts of a teenager whose parents feel is not fit for society, usually because of behavior issues. The parts are used at first on people that need them, but soon everyone wants new hair, or teeth, or a heart. Everyone looks good and lives longer, and disease is practically eradicated. The novels have undertones of the pro-life debate, and definitely address morality issues. Pretty good reads; author is Shusterman. He even includes real life news stories that are relevant to the story: Candidate Charlie Fuqua Advocates Stoning Rebellious Children, Per Deuteronomy "The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline. Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed from society in a way that gives an example to all other children of the importance of respect for parents. The death penalty for rebellious children is not something to be taken lightly. The guidelines for administering the death penalty to rebellious children are given in Deut 21:18-21" - Republican Charlie Fuqua, from his book God's Law "I think my views are fairly well-accepted by most people" - Charles Fuqua, as quoted by the Associated Press |
