Beer Appreciation
I searched the forum for a beer thread but all the relevant ones were locked.
I wa sinspired by the many weekly beer threads on the NOLA board so thought i would start a general beer disucssion thread. I have been drinking craft beer for about 4 years now. Absolutely love it. I am not adverse to any styles by my favourites would be stouts, lambics / sours and IPAs. Have some brilliant stouts cellared at the moment; Black Damnation XII, To Ol Sort Maelk, 2013 Brooklyn Brewery Black Ops, Brew Dog Paradox Heaven Hill and Brew Dog King Imp. Love going down to the liquor store and filling my Growler with fresh beer. Have recently joined a beer club that delivers 6x 750ml limited draught beers monthly. Looking forward to getting my first delivery later this month. Would love to hear some of the beers you guys have tried. The USA has some amazing craft breweries. |

Re: Beer Appreciation
Too many to list that I have tried... but we do indeed have many great ones. As my wife just finished her goal of running a marathon in all fifty states, we have sampled many a local beer in all fifty states. Some great ones in the NW.

A man is sitting at home on the patio with his wife and he says, "I love you."
She asks, "Is that you or the beer talking?" He replies, "It's me............. talking to the beer. |

LOL I like my beer in a bottle.

Re: Beer Appreciation
Tried a beer from New Orleans this weekend. Was a beer by Abita Brewing Company called Purple Haze. Had raspberries added post filtration so had a really nice pink hue to it. A lovely easy drinking ale.

Re: Beer Appreciation
The bottle shop I go to has a good range of Abita, including the Amber. Might try one of each.
I love a good IPA. Had Sixpoint's Global Warmer on the weekend. Big fruity aroma and was nice and easy to drink (even at 7%). Do you have a favourite IPA? |
Re: Beer Appreciation
I sure have. I prefer the scottish Punk IPA.
Most beers they produce are excellent. Buy Punk IPA | BrewDog Beer I also fancy some local Swedish IPAs. |
Re: Beer Appreciation
I love the Punk IPA. I bought a case of it a few weeks back. All gone now lol.
Their Hardcore IPA is amazing too. If you haven't tried their Jack Hammer, do yourself a favour. |
Re: Beer Appreciation
So many tried, so many want to try, impossible to list.
Just found a Bar in Pensacola, FL that has 112 beers on nitro taps. Tried a Kentucky Bourbon Stout that was awesome. I drift toward Porters and Stouts lately, not a big fan of real "Hoppy" brews. |

Was that Kentucky Bourbon Stout you tried from Goose Island? I had their Nightstalker Stout while in NYC a year or so ago. Was amazing. |

Re: Beer Appreciation
Just sampled pretty much all of the Greek beers, mostly lighter lagers. They did have one dark one, Fix Dark Premium Lager; not bad.

I tried this the other week. It's an English Brown. Really enjoyed it. Slowly getting through the Abita range. They are so cheap over here in Australia. Great value. |
Re: Beer Appreciation
Had the Abita Restoration Pale Ale last night. Great session ale. Beautiful colour and lacing. The taste was light lightly hopped flavour and a nice dry crisp finish.
I have found Abita make consistently great tasting beers. They don't have the complexity and wow factor that of some of the more experimental craft breweries create but they are very enjoyable beers. |
Re: Beer Appreciation
OK, so you Abita drinkers need to try the mixes. If you haven't done the Abita tour, I recommend it.
Golden Retriever : Fill bottom of glass with Turbodog and top off with Golden. Hound Dog : Fill bottom half of glass with Amber and top off with Turbodog. Purple Pooch : Fill bottom of glass with Purple Haze and top with Turbodog. (I recommend this one) Turbo-Gator : Fill 3/4 glass with Turbodog and top off with Andygator. Barney : Fill bottom half of glass with Andygator and top with Purple Haze. These are straight from the Brewery......enjoy. |

Re: Beer Appreciation
Aus got some Jester King over the last month so I picked up three different ones. Last year I had my first Jester King which was a sour brown. Absolutely amazing beer. Looking forward to having some more.

Re: Beer Appreciation
Just wondering if any of you guys have access to any of De Garde or Hill Farmstead beers? If so, would you be willing to ship them to Aus for me? I am happy to pay for the beer, shipping costs and a mark-up for your efforts.
It would be much appreciated!! |

Re: Beer Appreciation
Here's a couple of Michigan Craft Beers I sampled while attending the Detroit Boat Show, not bad. Both brewed by Old Nation Brewing Co. in Williamston, MI (wherever that is). The Detroit Dwarf was an Amber Ale and is named for the Nain Rouge, which is an interesting, historical story around the D and one your parents would use to make you behave as a kid,. It really didn't taste like an ale to me, more like a weak Guinness, but I liked it quite a bit. The second one, Two Crow, is a Black Sugar Stout, made with sugar beets, and actually tasted more like an ale to me, go figure. Looks like LSU was up on Texas A&M 72-66 when I snapped that Dwarf pic also, ;) ... you just can't script this stuff sometimes,.
I'll keep an eye out for the De Garde & Hills Farmstead brands, but like Smash said, they're on opposite coasts & I'm not sure how much of them is gonna' make it to the Midwest ... but we'll see, :). http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/t...psnq2rmmd4.jpg http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/t...psqgsum90v.jpg |
Re: Beer Appreciation
Another beer(s) I am keen to get my hands on is Goose Island stouts. If any of you can get those it would be fantastic!!

I'ma actually gonna' go out and try one of those, :). |
Re: Beer Appreciation
Question for the thread/forum:
So, I'm making it a point to drink a craft beer when I do have a beer. I'm noticing a lot of them have a fruity/orangey taste, even though they don't advertise having that ingredients ... and then when I do drink one with orange/grapefruit in it, it tastes the same as the ones that don't. Sooo, I asked a bartender about it, and she said it had something to do with the amount of hops in the beer? But let's face it, I wasn't really looking for her "expert" opinion, was only sitting at that bar because she was a fricken' hammer, there were no other customers in the place, had her undivided attention and was just trying to spark conversation, :). What say you, my B&G Beer Appreciation aficionados? |
