I'm just curious about how old these kids were. If they were 7 or 8 and in a T-Ball league where score isn't kept, then let them keep the trophies. Any older than that, they have to learn that you have to earn in life.

Yeah its a time and place for everything. I think commemorative "trophies" can be pretty neat sometimes, like a small plaque or something. You don't need the bigger stuff thou.

Meh, if that's his parenting-style, that's his business. Sometimes you can take being a hardass a little too far, IMO. I never returned any of my kid's participation awards and they turned out o.k., #shrug.
