Exactly my thoughts. For the most part I pulled it out to ensure he didnt come through the door and put me in a position where I had to shoot him. It wound up protecting him as much as myself.

That's scary man, but sounds like you handled it right. We had a guy in a similar situation shoot through the door ... I think they just sentenced him last month. Kudos for being a responsible gun owner, :).
