In 1977, when Slap Shot came out, the local team in Johnstown, PA folded. They tried it again in the 80's, but folded again. Now they have a new team in the ECHL.
I lived in Johnstown for two years, and it is one of the most depressing, gray, soul-less city in the U.S.
I hope this team can help the city in some way.

Really? I seriously may have to consider a road trip to catch a game before they fold again ... had a neighbor kid play for the Richmond Renegades in the ECHL & we'd drive to games now and then. Hope something has happened to change the economy in Johnstown, never been there, but I've been told it's a lot like Flint, MI (without the crime) after the auto plants closed down.

SlapShot ... what a great flic ... and it so accurately depicts junior-league hockey life, !

Slap Shot was written by the sister of one of the Jets at the time. I went to a lot of the Jets games, and it's still fun to see the players when I watch the movie.
Palm Holmgren actually played a week or two in Johnstown. He scored a little and beat the hell out of 5-6 guys. Bruce Boudreau also was there for a long time. A couple of players went on to the WHA, including Dave Hanson, for whom the Hansen brothers were named.

, Holmgren? There was a guy who could kick some ass and still score goals ... if anything, I'd think he was the inspiration for 'SlapShot', ... I love Junior Hockey, it's not pretty most the time, but it's entertaining, ... it's fun to see some of the guys make it to the NHL and be able to say, "I knew that guy when he played for ... "

That happens where I work lol. (Well not too often)...we have a lot of guys from the Traverse City North Stars. They we're talking before we went to the frozen four how unusual it was to have so many guys from the same junior team...and we have another 3 from there next year
