I love this one and I'm rooting for the US this game.

hehehe, I heard the audio for this on sportstalk yesterday and liked it ... had to chuckle at "but the theory of competition says just because they're the strong doesn't mean they can't get their asses kicked" & "the odds may be stacked against you, fair enough, but what the odds don't know is that this isn't a math test". They hung in there & kept it close against a bigger, faster, more precise opponent that basically controlled the game ... that's all you can do & hope for some kind of miracle at the end ... like we say around the rinks, "It was a good run boys" ... they represented well, .

Time for my rant:
The media is already loading up on stories about how this is great for American soccer, and how impressive our run was. I've followed US soccer for a long time and can't tell you how many times I have heard that.

The fact is we just finished (barely) in the top 16 in a world tournament, the same world in which we are the most developed nation. More bad news- we didn't qualify for the last summer Olympics, so our best talent is older.

Klinnsman chose a team that could compete but not win. They got as far as their talent would take them, and the Donovan omission was quite frankly a joke. Without him our game plan was defense and counter attacks, and the result was 5 goals in 4 matches: good enough for 'nice try', but not good enough to win.

Yeah, while I do think they did as well as can be expected, I wouldn't call it "impressive" & agree the media has been pouring it on a bit ... I do think soccer has evolved in the US quite a bit though, to the point where it's reasonable now to have expectations of them making it to the quarterfinals vs just qualifying/making it into the 'sweet sixteen'.

The whole Donovan thing had me confused and I thought maybe it was a 'chemistry' thing. Some of his comments lead me to believe he might be the prima-donna/high maintenance type guy on a club, IDK ... we definitely could have used more of a goal scoring punch, that's for sure.

One thing for certain though (IMO), with the ratings on this World Cup and the success/popularity of the US team, you're gonna' see more & more advertisers get on board with the sport & that's when the real successes will come, .
