I think 'pathetic' was a harsh word to use under the circumstances. I mean, it's not like Prince was found with a heroin needle in his hand. But other that I don't disagree with what Gene said.

Re: Gene Simmons on Prince: ‘How Pathetic That He Killed Himself’
I'm not tired of Simmons. I just recognize that he's a marketer. That's what he does. As for rock/music/bands, KISS was a great act, but I'd hardly call Gene and the gang 'artists', at least not on any level that approaches Prince.
As a lover of music - what I call 'real' music, the kind where human beings actually take the time to master an instrument and use it to create art, well, Prince ranks high on my list. Gene is right. Sort of. I don't think Prince committed suicide, and I think the guy was probably in a great deal of pain, and I think addiction is an evil thing that, unless you've experienced it, you don't have a clue. Gene should hush right now. Everybody should just hush. None of us know what it was like to be Prince. We cannot relate. Everybody just shut up and wait until all the details are in before we start calling him a drug addict or suicidal or anything else other than the brilliant musician and the genuinely caring human being he was. Artistically, Prince MUCH MUCH MUCH > > > > > Kiss. |

Re: Gene Simmons on Prince: ‘How Pathetic That He Killed Himself’
I kinda liked prince, but 80% of his music was crap to my ears.
Another dead musician with self inflicted wounds. Sorry, but I could really couldn't care less. Kinda sad it happened, but it happens everyday to people who are much greater on a humanity level than some self absorbed ego-maniac musician that people falsely idolize. |

I could have gone to see him in Oakland a few weeks before he passed away. I will always regret not pulling the trigger on a 60 dollar seat in the rafters, and I don't have lots of regrets. I'd hardly call him an absorbed ego-maniac musician - there are lots of those. Prince was gifted in a way I doubt he himself fully understood. He was also very giving and very private about it. I know a little because I followed him to some degree, but I suspect we're all going to learn things about him that will shock to some extent. Go have a listen to "Brand New Orleans". What you'll find is that it'll sync itself to whatever you're doing. That's amazing. And that's just one example. Prince was a heck of a lot more than Purple Rain, which is also a brilliant song. Listen to the space in that song. Lots of space, and too many musicians, especially these days, fear space. The exceptional ones use it as a tool. His death is tragic on many levels. I just think we need to hold off with our opinions until we have a little more information. |
