Trading down
If the Saints trade down I think we should draft D'Brickshaw Ferguson. This kid appears to be a monster at LT and lord knows we need to get rid of Gandy. We could then pick up Brodie Croyle at QB in the second round and with the extra second we would get in the trade down we could get a LB. I would't mind getting Hawk in a trade down either at this point. I used to want Leinart or Young, but now I am more sold on Cutler and Croyle as being better values for the pick.

RE: Trading down
My biggest fear is that Leinart will end up being like the next Shuler. Remember him?!?!?!?!? I agree with stock. I say we should get Hawk.

I basically agree with this strategy for several reasons.
1. Our head coach has built a career of getting great results from shaky QBs. If ever we can pass on the can't miss QB prospect it should be this year. 2. A-Mac--he's really the question mark here. Maybe he isn't being allocated to NFL-E because Payton wants to see what he has in the kid prior to the draft. If Payton can make guys like Qunicy Carter, Vinnie and Drew Bledsoe into 3000 yard guys again, he might be able to really do something with an athletic monster like A-Mac? 3. Given our other needs, we can probably afford to wait until round 2 and get a guy like Croyle (or whoever, I haven't really figured out my post first round QB preference). The main point being that there are several quality prospects who should fall into round 2. If A-Mac shows real promise we could even wait more. 4. D'Brickshaw Ferguson. He's had a monster senior bowl week and dominated the best guys coming out of college this year. He should be able to come in and start. I for one would like to have the next Willie Roaf in black and gold. The trouble with this is we can't trade down far, if at all, to get him. Long arms, great feat, a frame to add more muscle, great technique all spell the can't miss prospect of this draft. 5. I like Hawk, but I like nailing down the LT position more given the emphasis in our division with pressuring the QB. |

I like the idea of trading down. How about dj shockley as opposed to croyle?

RE: Trading down
there is nothing to say that hawk or ferguson won't be busts. there are plenty examples of LTs and LBs taken early in the first round that have been busts.
what did croyle do in college? that alabama offense only scored 10 points a game. cutler had 1 great year. those guys make me very nervous. i would rather take leinart and see him bust than not take him and watch him become a hall of fame QB on another team. |

RE: Trading down
DJ shockly is the most over rated QB. He will not be a good NFL qb. He is another AB.

RE: Trading down
To me this is one of the best top 10 drafts in recent memory. We are going to be able to draft an impact player whether we stay put or trade down even to spot number 5. We will have a shot at: Matt Leinart, Vince Young, D'Brickshaw Ferguson, AJ Hawk. In my opinion the most can't miss are in this order:
1)Ferguson 2)Hawk 3)Leinart 4)Young Qb's by the nature of the position are the hardest to evaluate skills to the next level, and I just don't think the Saints are in the position to gamble with this pick at this point. I think if you can trade down with the Jets at number 4 and get a high second rounder out of it you have to do it. Ferguson would be my pick if I were running the show. |

RE: Trading down
You guys need to remember that Benson is worried about selling tickets. If he trades down for a lineman or linebacker and passes on a QB, his already shaky fan base will accuse the team of selling out. However, If he can market a Hiesman Trophy winning QB for the home games, the fans will come back.

RE: Trading down
bullcrap... Leinart isn't going to put fans in seats. Wins will and the way to start doing to is building one of the best lines in the NFL - FERGY should be our pick. If you want fans in seats you draft an exciting player like YOUNG not Leinart.
