Eagles reportedly target top-42 pick for McNabb; Rams, Cards out

The Philadelphia Eagles will only consider trading Donovan McNabb if they receive a top-42 pick in next month's NFL draft, a person familiar with discussions involving the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback told The Associated Press on Thursday night.

The Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills continue to be linked to McNabb, according to NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora, and both teams have two picks in the top 42. The Raiders have selection Nos. 8 and 39, and the Bills pick No. 9 and No. 41.

The St. Louis Rams also have two top-42 picks -- Nos. 1 and 33. However, Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo shot down a Philadelphia Inquirer report that the team had offered the No. 33 selection and free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe to the Eagles for McNabb.

So, what's the deal?
Teams have approached the Eagles about their QBs, and while there is no clear sense of what move could be made, Vic Carucci has some possible destinations. More ...

» La Canfora: QBs are all the talk
"There's nothing to that," Spagnuolo said, according to the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. "We're not involved in that. At this time of year, there are going to be all kinds of things thrown out there. But no, there's nothing to it."

Spagnuolo's comments came one day after Rams general manager Billy Devaney called the report "utterly ridiculous." Two sources with knowledge of the situation also told La Canfora that it wasn't true.

The Rams have recently opened talks with Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, among other prospects they might draft at No. 1. They also have quarterbacks Marc Bulger, A.J. Feeley, Keith Null and Mike Reilly on their roster.

League sources indicated to La Canfora that the Cardinals also were targeting McNabb, but general manager Rod Graves e-mailed the team's Web site Thursday to say he had "no interest." The Cardinals signed former Cleveland Browns starter Derek Anderson this offseason, and coach Ken Whisenhunt has said longtime backup Matt Leinart will enter training camp as the No. 1 quarterback.

La Canfora reported Wednesday that several executives on other clubs pointed to the Raiders as being in the heaviest pursuit, although two unnamed team executives told the Oakland Tribune on Thursday they weren't aware of any calls to the Eagles about McNabb.

The Raiders juggled three quarterbacks last season, with JaMarcus Russell, Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye all seeing playing time because of ineffectiveness and injuries. The Bills had similar issues, playing Ryan Fitzpatrick, Trent Edwards and Brian Brohm at the position.

Eagles coach Andy Reid caused an uproar Wednesday when he said the team was entertaining trade offers for all three of their quarterbacks -- McNabb, Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick. McNabb responded by saying he wants to stay in Philadelphia, but if the Eagles want to trade him, they should "do it quickly."

It's still possible the Eagles would accept a selection outside the top 42 if a team sweetened the offer with other picks and/or players, according to The AP.

McNabb could be expendable because he's entering the final season of his contract and Kolb is considered to be the Eagles' quarterback of the future. McNabb, 33, has led Philadelphia to five NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl appearance in 11 seasons.

McNabb had an outstanding 2009 season until the final two games -- consecutive losses at Dallas. The first cost the Eagles the NFC East title and a first-round bye in the playoffs. The second came in a wild-card game and ended Philadelphia's season.
