More controversy for Blount after spurning 49ers for Titans
Controversy has found LeGarrette Blount once again.
The former Oregon running back, who was suspended for most of the 2009 season after punching an opposing player, spurned the San Francisco 49ers to sign a rookie free-agent contract with the Tennessee Titans. Blount had agreed to terms with the Niners but bolted for Nashville when a better opportunity presented itself. Because he only agreed to terms and not signed a deal, Blount was free to change his mind. The opening in Nashville was created by the trade of Lendale White(notes) to the Seattle Seahawks. Jeff Fisher's team was in need of a power back like Blount, who would have fought for playing time in San Francisco with similar backs like Frank Gore(notes), Glen Coffee(notes) and Anthony Dixon(notes). Blount reportedly told 49ers coach Mike Singletary of his decision before signing with the Titans and the two are said to be "on good terms." There's no reason to think they wouldn't be. As an undrafted player, Blount was free to sign with whichever team would have him. He can't be worried about honoring a non-binding agreement when a better situation comes along. His goal is to make an NFL roster and he has a much better shot of doing so in Tennessee. There should be no hard feelings when a player makes a decision based in his self interest. The teams do it before every regular season when they cut guys to get the rosters down to 45. Turnabout is fair play. Blount was suspended for most of his final season at Oregon after punching a Boise State player following the teams' season opener last September. He was reinstated late in the year and had hoped to be a late-round pick in this weekend's NFL draft. By going undrafted, however, Blount was able to pick his own destination. After one aborted attempt, he appears to have done just that. |
