Manning Vs Manning

As the franchise quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, Peyton Manning has more to worry about than Colts defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis chasing little brother Eli Manning with malicious intent.

"It evens out," Peyton said Wednesday, "because Tuck and Osi, those guys certainly get their chance as well."

Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiori are defensive ends who will chase Peyton for the New York Giants, who meet the Colts on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

With Peyton, 34, and Eli, 29, playing quarterback, it's Manning Bowl II. The Colts prevailed when the same teams and quarterbacks met in 2006.

Eli likes the timing of this meeting better.

"Four years ago, it was the opening game of the year and once the schedule came out in April, we had almost five months of talking about it and getting questions about it, answering the same questions over and over," Eli said.

"I think it was just hard on Peyton and I because it became a bigger deal the fact that we were playing and not the game."

Under the current scheduling format, the Mannings won't meet again until 2014 unless it's in a Super Bowl. The interconference rotation matches the AFC South Colts and the NFC East Giants every four years.

"I hope to make it to that 2014 game," Peyton said. "I'll probably be out of eligibility by the time 2018 comes around."

Hello, Colts nation

Cornerback Justin Tryon signed with the Colts on Sept. 4. Eight days later, he played nickel back in the opener at Houston. He also made three of their four special teams tackles, including a touchdown-saver on Jacoby Jones' 39-yard punt return.

Tryon even distinguished himself when things didn't go right.

As a punt team gunner, he got downfield and was in position to down a punt at the Houston 1. When he glanced down to gather his feet to the goal line, he lost sight the ball. It bounced into the end zone for a touchback.

On another punt, Tryon downed the ball at the Texans 1. Oops. An "illegal touch" penalty was called. Tryon had been bumped out of bounds, so he couldn't be the first player to touch the ball. Houston took possession at the 20.

"I didn't see any (other Colts) by the ball and I thought the referee might have missed it," Tryon said. "So I was taking a chance."

It was a fairly impressive debut on short reps for Tryon, a third-year player the Colts acquired in a trade with Washington for an undisclosed draft choice.

Collie keeps busy

Manning threw 12 passes intended for second-year wide receiver Austin Collie in the 34-24 loss at Houston. Give Manning high marks for accuracy. Give Collie high marks for efficiency. He caught 11 of them for 163 yards and a touchdown.

"I like to think that I'm reliable and I'm going to try to make a play every time he comes to me," said Collie, who scored on a 73-yard play. "Unfortunately, on that fumble, I didn't; I put it on the ground and that's completely my fault and entirely unacceptable."

Give him high marks for accountability, too. Collie fumbled when he was hit hard by Texans safety Bernard Pollard after a 32-yard gain to the Houston 9.

Wrong culprit

The holding penalty that nullified Devin Moore's 103-yard kickoff return was attributed by referee Ed Hochuli to Colts guard Jaimie Thomas. Incorrect. Thomas, No. 73, was not on the field. The infraction was committed by linebacker Kavell Conner, No. 53.
