Question RAIDERS RE-NAME STADIUM

It seems like everybody is slapping their name on a stadium, ballpark or arena. This whole thing started back in the late 80's/early 90's where so-and-so company has their name on a stadium, much to the shagrin of fans. Remember when the Dolphins home stadium was Land Shark Stadium when the Saints played the Dolphins only to change it to Sun Life Stadium months later when the Saints played in SB XLIV?

Now, the Raiders re-named their stadium Overstock.com Stadium (formerly Oakland-Alameda County (Penitentiary) Stadium.)

The Oakland Raiders get a new, ridiculous stadium name - Shutdown Corner - NFL*Blog - Yahoo! Sports

Sure... listen to it now... the voice of NFL Films:

"on a dark, ominous day... when the unmovable object met the irresistable force. In the muddy trenches, an epic battle raged, as a panzer division met courageous resistance in the great struggle of...

... Overstock.com field..."

NOPE! not feeling it.

----here, lets try some other current facilities:

"on a dark, ominous day... when the unmovable object met the irresistable force. In the muddy trenches, an epic battle raged, as a panzer division met courageous resistance in the great struggle of...

"Everbank Field, Quest Field, Lincoln Financial Field, Reliant Energy." Are you serious?

Anybody else see some incredible corporate lameness happening? What the hell has happened to the world? If they're that hard up for money, in a game that generates a surplus of 9 billion bucks, they're doing something wrong, and they're certainly not thinking about the future.

Do they not understand that the reason people spend money on football, is because they care about it. The reason they care about it, is because it was, for decades a cultural institution. That culture dies a little more every time they name something after University of Phoenix.

Bronko Nagurski would never plow thru a line in anything called, "Quallcom." Stadiums should be named after dead people, war veterans, and candlesticks. Or at least be a college field, like Penn, or Tulane.

What the hell is wrong with the world now? Hats off to Soldier Field, Paul Brown, Lambeau, and Candlestick for not selling out, and retaining their football-real name. And of course, the one, the only-- Louisiana Superdome. Whoever's idea it was to name stadiums stupid corporate names, should be punched in the mouth by Ray Nitschke.

That would be like the dome being named "The Really Big Dome"

or Mike Curtis, Joe Greene, Doug Atkins even Tommy Myers!!

I have noticed it back in the 80's with the jersey companies (Champion, Russell, Bike, which was no big deal up until recently). Now it has spilled over into stadiums. John Facenda and Harry Kalas are both banging their heads in their graves if the were alive to even spit a verse about "Qualcomm", "Heinz", "Overstock.com", "Mall of America" (which should be called "Jiffy Pop Dome") or any other corporate named stadium being called the "Epic Battle in the Trenches".

Speaking of the voice of NFL Films, wouldn't it be cool if Don La Fontaine (the "In a world..." movie trailer voice) was still living and woulod do an NFL highlight voiceover? That would be good, but will also hurt because of the corporate jargon slapped on a stadium. coliseum or dome.

Don't forget... orignally it was Joe Robbie Stadium, then changed to Pro Player Stadium in 1996, Dolphins Stadium in 2005, Dolphin Stadium in 2006, Land Shark Stadium in 2009, and finally, Sun Life Stadium in 2010, for now. Talk about an identity crisis!
