1st MNF 1971 TD who knew?
I heard about this from a Southeastern La Univ student who did the sports column, I grad from there and we became good friends. He told me the first TD scored was by a former SLU student. I didn't believe him at first but it's true. His name is William Doughty Andrews Jr.
He scored his only NFL touchdown in the first Monday Night Football game televised by ABC on September 21, 1970. Late in the fourth quarter, he intercepted Joe Namath and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to secure the Browns' 31-21 victory. He now lives in Bluff Creek, Louisiana, a small community outside of Clinton. |

Who would have guessed that the first MNF TD was by a defensive player? Not me.

He was also a 13th round pick and I think he played for 11 seasons. Not bad for someone from a tiny school like Southeastern. I wish WWL would do a story on him and see if he would agree to an interview. I bet he has some good stories to tell.
