Rob Lowe thinks Manning is retiring
PLAYERS: Peyton Manning TEAMS: Indianapolis Colts It’s the tweet that sent bloggers & Twitter dorks into a frenzy 20 minutes ago. Rob Lowe, off the radar to most sports junkies, is now reporting that Peyton Manning’s NFL career is over. How does he know such news? He has f*cking sources, baby! Lowe went on to tweet Rich Eisen asking him what he’s hearing. Lowe then told his followers he hopes his sources are wrong. Can we all just say a little prayer that Lowe is right and scooped Schefter & Mort? Please. (via @RobLowe) Original Story: 18 | January | 2012 | Busted Coverage... |

(Good enough thread to place this rather than start a new one)
So what about Peyton? On NFL Network, Kurt Warner was just saying that he could PM going to someplace warmer ...perhaps Miami or San Francisco. Warner said that A.Smith was part of the 49's year, but he has a one-year contract. |

I am sure that someone is looking into Peyton Manning "retiring" as a means of getting around his enormous gigantic contract with the Colts. And it may be both parties that are looking into it. I wonder if Peyton actually "retires," I would assume he gets to keep some of the money from the deal (guarantee etc), and then some of the money must be returned to the Colts, or they just don't have to pay it to him if he is "retired." I'd assume so. But then, would Peyton's "retirement" mean the same thing as tearing up the Colts contract, and he can freely walk away and go somewhere else? I dunno about that.
But if Peyton was somehow free from that Colts contract, they could go with Luck, and he would then be able to get a lower, better deal, with another team somewhere else. I actually don't think many teams will want Peyton as a trade, right now, with that enormous contract of his -- it really is a HUGE chunk of the cap. Their whole Colts team was built around it. To go to another team, I think Peyton would need a new lower contract, sorta like Brees did, that takes into account his injury and that he's a bit of a gamble, plus in Peyton's case (not Brees) the fact that the neck injury stuff will probably shorten his overall career considerably more than we all thought. But I imagine Peyton would have to sit out at least some period of time to be considered officially "retired" and then come back. I'd love to know more about how that part of the contract works; there has to be stuff in the fine print about it, that we don't know about. |

My plan for the Colts:
Trade Manning for a 1,2,3. Draft Luck and Jonathan Martin in the first. Draft Fleener and Hightower in the second. Draft LaMichael James and Cordy Glenn in the third. Sign Hillis, Mario Williams, and Aubrayo Franklin. Do some other stuff too. |

What a mess. I would have liked to see Peyton Manning go out on top like Elway did, not floundering around for a couple of years like Montana and Favre did.
But I guess we put a damper on that in Fobruary 2009. LOL |
