"I just like the pride the city always had in itself," said Fangio, a Dunmore, Pa., native whose first NFL coaching job was with the Saints under head coach Jim Mora. He later moved on to defensive coordinator at Carolina from 1995-98, defensive coordinator at Indianapolis under Mora from 1999-2001, defensive coordinator at Houston from 2002-05, assistant at Baltimore from 2006-09, defensive coordinator at Stanford in 2010 and now at San Francisco.

"New Orleans always takes a little shot for not being a good city, but the people that have been born and raised here love this place and never leave it," Fangio said. "And I felt like I became one of them in the nine years I was here. And this is still the city and franchise that I feel the most connection to out of all my stops in the NFL."

Fangio loved being with the Saints, even though at the time the facility was a cramped, disjointed mess across David Drive from a junkyard in Metairie.

"I loved it there," he said. "One of the best things about the place at David Drive was it was so small, you were never far from anybody. It always had that homey feeling to it. We didn't care."
