Cowboys of the 1990s were horsing around with, according to one former player.

Tony Casillas, a defensive tackle on two of the Cowboys' Super Bowl teams, told radio station KRLD-FM 105.3 the players in his day used a liniment intended for horses.

"When I heard about Deer Antler Spray, I said that's nothing," Casilllas told Elf and Slater of The Fan in Wednesday's interview. "We used to use this stuff called DMSO. That's what veterinarians put on horses' muscles and we used it in the locker room."

DMSO is a solvent that is often used as a topical analgesic because it absorbs into the skin so quickly. It is commonly used on horses, but can have serious side effects on humans.

Because it penetrates the skin so easily, DMSO can be used to deliver other drugs to the system. However, Casillas described it as being used to relieve the players' sore muscles – just like with a horse.

"You put it on your skin and you put it on a muscle, and I guarantee you, in about 30 minutes you'd feel great," Casillas told The Fan. "If you're going to talk about the deer antler stuff, we used DMSO and people knew it. Everyone knew it."

Deer Antler Spray has been in the news recently as a banned performance enhancing substance, similar to HGH. Baltimore Ravens linebacker was alleged to have used the substance to help recover from a torn triceps. Golfer Vijay Singh has admitted to using it.

As for DMSO, what was good for the horse was also apparently good for the Cowboy.

"I'm not sure about this deer antler stuff, but it [DMSO] was prevalent in our locker room," Casillas said. "You get if from the veterinarian."
