Maybe Paul Johnson was onto something Updated
Update: The hosts have been fired. The right move.
Our original post is below: As you’re no doubt aware, on this morning’s Mayhem in the AM on 790 the Zone in Atlanta, the hosts made tasteless jokes about Steve Gleason and his battle with ALS. The station has issued an apology , half-hearted as it may be, but this attitude is the rule rather than the exception at 790. They did suspend those involved with the ill-advised bit. “We deeply regret the comments made by Mayhem In The AM this morning on 790 The Zone regarding former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason. 790 The Zone, Lincoln Financial Media, our sponsors and partners in no way endorse or support the unfortunate and offensive commentary concerning Mr. Gleason this morning. The members of the show involved with this incident have been suspended indefinitely pending further management review of their actions.” Relatively recently, 790 became the ESPN affiliate in the Atlanta market, but it has been the longtime flagship station for Georgia Tech football and basketball. You’d expect, then, that the station would have a warm relationship with the school’s coaches. Not so much in this case. Paul Johnson steadfastly refuses to appear (or to allow his players and staff to appear) on 790′s morning show, opting instead to appear on rival station 680′s show. For quite some time, Johnson’s refusal was characterized as petty and insecure. Perhaps, however, he was onto something. It seems that Mayhem in the AM and their transplanted hosts, Steak Shapiro (from Boston), Nick Cellini (from Ohio), and Chris DiMino (from Brooklyn), might just be jerks. Maybe Paul Johnson doesn’t just have thin skin, and these guys really aren’t worth wasting time on. Today’s classless radio stunt sure points in that direction. Station apologizes for Gleason joke |
