Re: Penalty or not? Bengals P Huber out for year
If they want to be considered a defensless player then don't play defense. If the punter/kicker is attempting to tackle the other team he is fair game and better be ready cause that is every blockers dream. If they want to declare him defenseless then he should not be allowed to make a tackle or any progression towards the ball, just kick and get out of the way.

Re: Penalty or not? Bengals P Huber out for year
The only thing I wonder if he gets hit with the helmet or just the shoulder. If its the shoulder then its a legal hit and just too bad he got injured. If its a hit with the helmet then its a penlty. Most importantly I hope he has a speedy recovery. A fractured vertabrae is no joke.

Wow, that was brutal like getting hit by a car. Hopes for a speedy recovery.

Wow that is so close to going either way.
I expect Goodell will probably fine him anyway. It was borderline unnecessary. The dude is the freaking punter. Its also so close to that other rule about peel back blocks. |

Re: Penalty or not? Bengals P Huber out for year
I'm with this, that's my take on it. My reaction isn't even worrying whether it's a legal hit or not, my reaction is, uh, WHY? You can easily take him out the play without sending him to the freaking hospital for a week. Garvin must be a real tough guy -- ooooh he decked a freaking defenseless punter. I mean if you view these types of one-on-one football things philosophically, as man vs. man, a test of physicality, like gladiators or wrestling or rugby blah blah blah, well that hit certainly didn't prove anything about Garvin.

Re: Penalty or not? Bengals P Huber out for year
He was not penalized for helmet to helmet, or how hard he hit him. In the rules a punter is considered a defenseless player <full stop>... Yep, even when he is trying to tackle and you cant hit him above the pads.
Fine.... Label kickers non-football players and make them run off the field after they punt. I doubt Garvin even knew he was the punter... Saw an opposing player and just nailed him. |
