So did anyone hear?

about Goddell's latest plan?

WhoDat!656 01-20-2014 08:26 PM

NFL Considering A Proposal To Eliminate Extra Points

The extra point is almost automatic,” Goodell said, via NFL.com. “I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd. So it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.

“There’s one proposal in particular that I’ve heard about. It’s automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six.”

Goodell: NFL may consider getting rid of the extra point

Re: So did anyone hear?

Are you talking about him wanting to get rid of the PAT? I just read about that.

His proposal is so freaking pointless and stupid, I almost don't know where to begin bashing it. He thinks that because PAT's are so automatic that it's too boring (You should meet Garret Hartley, Roger). So he believes that a touchdown should be seven points automatically (ummm, what was that about automatic being boring? *scratching head*). Anyway, as if that doesn't make little enough sense, the rest of his idea is that you can choose to go for an 8th point with a play from scrimmage, but if you miss it you go back to 6 points...

Ummm..... Isn't that basically the exact same thing as going for two and not making it, resulting in only getting 6 points? Yes, yes it is. The only difference being that if you choose not to go for two you still automatically get 7 points. So kicking a PAT is apparently TOO automatic, but LITERALLY having an automatic 7th point is somehow exciting.

If anyone is looking for top of the market drugs, I think Roger's house is the place to go.

lol. Yeah, I guess it is kinda like that. It sounds like something a small child would come up with, honestly.

It is the most boring play in football

Just make it go for two every time...

I like the idea.

I can see teams weighing the option of going for the 8th point vs only getting 6.

You don't think the Saints would have done this against Seattle in the playoffs?

Re: So did anyone hear?

What if you agree to move back to the 15... can you get three points?
Can you get fractions?
Kickoffs are boring and automatic too; maybe he can f*** with that some more

Oh, and hey Rog, did you happen to catch the Eagles - Lions game this year? was that boring and automatic?

If the Saints had scored another touchdown they would have HAD to go for two. You don't see how stupid this idea is? What's the difference?

It will be the exact same decision as it always has been. Teams would 99 percent of the time go for the sure thing instead of risking losing it. But when they HAVE to go for the extra point, they will. Just like always. Like I said, the only difference is you no longer have to work for the one point if you want it, which when you stop and think about it for a second, makes the 7th point just that much more boring.

So if the object is to make it more exciting, this plan is a failure. People will not go for the "8th point" any more than they go for two now.

Re: So did anyone hear?

Why don't they just take two points away as well when a team turns the ball over.

Kickers would no longer be needed.. good thing we got rid of ours before everyone else!

This coupled with 18 game seasons and additional seeds in the playoffs smh someones on crack. As the saying goes... if its not broke don't fix it.

He hasn't proposed to remove FGs from the game yet. Kickers would still be relevant. For now.....mwah hahahaaaa ......dumb

Actually this isn't a Roger Goodell idea. IIRC Bill bellicheck and maybe jerry jones put this in motion.
Needless to say several coach and owners brought this idea to light

As someone else mentioned, thhe Eagles/Lions game in the snow was really interesting, it was gutsy and raw because both teams opted to go for 2 every time, because the kicking was so bad. But I don't know if I'd want to watch that every week....

For one thing, you'd have whole games hinging on one minor play, early in the game: a failed 2 point conversion in the first quarter could mess things up completely for an underdog type team fighting for their lives against a better team....it could mess with all kinds of things. It'd give more opportunities for games to be decided on "controversial" plays or judgement calls from refs...that is something we do not need.

Another idea would be to move the kicked extra point back, so it's not such an easy chip shot.... Spot the ball on the 12 if you opt to kick for 1.

Re: So did anyone hear?

Place the ball on the 37 yard line, making it a 45 yard PAT.

ScottF 01-21-2014 12:55 PM

Re: So did anyone hear?

maybe they can also do that beginning of the game 2 man scrum for the ball instead of a coin toss, which is always boring as well

Re: So did anyone hear?

I'm all for changing it somehow. I don't think the kick should be eliminated though. 20 yard field goals are a joke. I would say make them kick it 35 or 40 yards. That way more variable come in to play such as wind. Keep it a one point field goal. No need to re-invent the wheel here. Just move them back farther.

This is like scientists who use their time and brilliance on ways to create mango-blueberry chewing gum. Aren't there other areas (concussions. replay, holding, PI, attendance in Jacksonville) that the NFL experts should be addressing first?

Re: So did anyone hear?

Other senseless and unnecessary changes...

PAT's from the 20, if missed the other team has the option to take it at the point of the miss (27 yard line) just like a regular FG.

Allow FG's to be punted thru the uprights.

Just go ahead and eliminate KO's, its what they're trying to do already.

Allow intentional grounding, its easier than putting a skirt on the QB's.

Mandatory knee braces for everyone (I actually like this one).

Eliminate the 2 minute warning.

Clock stops on 1st downs (like NCAA).

Re: So did anyone hear?

Take extra points from the yards the TD play was from.

Hilarious if a 90 yard TD run. Might as well go for 2 in that case. ha ha ha ha plonk
