Dolphin CB suspended for tweeting "OMG, horrible" after Sam's gay kiss

Dolphins fine, suspend Don Jones from offseason program
Posted by Mike Florio on May 11, 2014, 10:36 PM EDT
Jones AP

Just as the Dolphins were watching the Jonathan Martin/Richie Incognito mess fade into the distance, another member of the team has created a situation with which the team dealt swiftly and decisively.

The Dolphins announced that cornerback Don Jones has been fined by the team and excused from offseason workouts “until such time that he undergoes and completes educational training for his recent comments made on social media during the NFL Draft.”

Specifically, Jones posted disapproving comments on Twitter after the Rams drafted defensive end Michael Sam — and after ESPN showed an on-air kiss between Sam and another man who wasn’t his twin brother. Jones said “omg” after the kiss was televised, and later called the moment “horrible.”

“I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media,” Jones said in a statement released by the team. “I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment. I remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round and all of the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for an NFL team and I wish him all the best in his NFL career. I sincerely apologize to Mr. Ross, my teammates, coaches, staff and fans for these tweets. I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to do so going forward.”

“We were disappointed to read Don’s tweets during the NFL Draft,” coach Joe Philbin said. “They were inappropriate and unacceptable, and we regret the negative impact these comments had on such an important weekend for the NFL. We met with Don today about respect, discrimination and judgment. These comments are not consistent with the values and standards of our program. We will continue to emphasize and educate our players that these statements will not be tolerated.”

While Jones’ comments were inappropriate and merit scorn from the general public, it’s tricky to punish a player for views expressed on his own time via his own Twitter page while away from the workplace regarding someone who isn’t even on his team. Plenty of NFL players have made homophobic remarks over the years on Twitter and elsewhere; those comments often are ignored by their teams. Why does the fact that Jones’ remarks — which were far more tame than some of the stuff other NFL players have said about homosexuals — related to a player on another NFL team make them automatically worthy of punishment?

That’s not a rhetorical question. If the arrival of an openly gay man on an NFL team is going to subject players to punishment for saying things that reflect intolerance of homosexuality, all players deserve the benefit of clear guidance as to what will trigger adverse action from their employer.

If the NFL isn’t going to provide it voluntarily, the NFLPA needs to demand it.

They handled that better then the Eagles did with Cooper.

So you're equating someone's reaction to gay lovers kissing over and over to a redneck screaming the N-word at people?

I don't get that one.

I thought it was disgusting too. I don't like seeing it over and over and over and over again.

I'm saying if they punished him so swiftly for not approving of same sex PDA I wonder why the Eagles dropped the ball with Cooper. Not equating. Saying more should have been done with Cooper by comparison.

The Dolphins dealt with the issue well. Wether you agree with his lifestyle or not there was no need for a player to put any comment up on social media. Players know everything they say is in the public eye and they need to start taking responsibility for anything they say. If you have nothing good to say keep shut.

The Dolphins were quick to get in warn/fine the player and tell advise him on comments on social media. They have done what any employer woylt do and have done it quickly killing any fire before it starts.

It was a little more than I wanted to see. And they just kept playing it over, and over AND OVER!!

I didn't realize Vaccaro tweeted "Oh my." All I kept thinking was I hope my dad's not watching the draft.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I am all for equal rights for gays and people being who they want to be.
I am not for punishing someone who doesn't feel the same way.
Was what Jones said inappropriate? Mildly. Did it merit this degree of punishment? IMO, no.

Re: Dolphin CB suspended for tweeting "OMG, horrible" after Sam's gay kiss

I didn't see the need for suspension a warning/fine would have covered it but after last year I think the ownership wanted to been seen to do better.

I'm not as uncomfortable as some with them screening him and his partner but I agree no need for the loop. I dont want to see them but then I dont want to see a player and his girlfriend/wife either. The league would have been better letting him announce his sexuality and then ignoring the issue. Its done, we know he's gay and the players know notjing more needs said. The league want him to be a flag waiving leader and I dont think he really wants to be.

I think that is the main thing here. If it would have been another team I think the reaction would have been much less severe.

Count me in as one who got tired of seeing it played over and over again.

I also got sick of seeing Johnny Manziel, every time he wasn't drafted then when he finally was they had to show that over and over again.

Don't watch it over and over again if you're tired of seeing it. There's what... 4000 tv channels?! Get over it.

If you wanna watch gay guys kissing, you turn to the gay channel. I dont wanna see it on my sports channel.

Quit forcing your gayness down everyone's throat.

We have PC'ed ourselves into stupidity.

Change the name of Wash Redskins.
Change the name of Notre Dame.
I am waiting for someone to suggest Saints is a name that has to go.

Jones is cut from preseason games and fined for saying something very mildly against Sam.
If Sam were a man, oh he is, and there was a picture of him very explicitly kissing his girlfriend/wife, same thing could said.
That is, was a bit too much.

I could care less about Sam being gay.
So what!!
I do think he is first gay and football player second. I do think he is out to promote himself and his cause.
From his moment with his boyfriend there to their trip to Las Vegas this weekend to more and more self-promotion by him and boyfriend.

Really, I hope he is a draft bust.
He is hardly on the team and he is out self-promoting himself and his cause rather than the Rams and NFL or his football career.
I feel sorry for Rams' fans.

If he had kissed his girlfriend after hearing his name called, wouldn't even be noticed. Every other player does the same thing. Same sex relationships are not hidden in the world we live in now and that is just how it is. If they had had a broadcasted make-out session, well different story. I had no problem with it, his life.

Hey, if our society can find 11 zillion other things offensive, I don't see a problem with many people finding a homosexual make-out session on a loop offensive.

And the issue here isn't his swapping spit on TV with his homosexual lover, its the fact that another person was fined and suspended for apparently being offended by it.

It seems quite hypocritical to me.

I could care less if he's a gay football player. I don't agree with that "chosen" lifestyle and I don't care if there are gay players in the NFL. Can you play football at a high level? That's all I care about. What makes me upset is the fact that it's more about a person's chosen sexual preference than it is about a sport that we all love to watch and the fact that a player can now be fined and suspended for voicing their disapproval over that televised circus that is our politically correct world of today. Go ahead and dish out your way of life for the world to see but be prepared to take the criticism that comes with it too. This whole thing has turned into one big circus.

So you are that deep into it that you want to see anyone kiss another person? This new era belief that "its right because they make it right" is pure rationalization. I don't want to see Drew kiss his wife, Tebow kiss God, or Sam his his lover.

These are the only acceptable NFL kisses.

Danno, he wasn't punished because he tweeted "OMG horrible", that is just the excuse put on paper.

This is the Miami Dolphins we are talking about, they are so hypersensitive after the Incognito/Martin issue that some of their coaches knew about, condoned, and championed... that the organization has gone overboard trying to change the image painted by themselves. This CB wasn't punished for what he said, he was punished to try and clean up the image of the Miami Dolphins.

Sacrificial Lamb.

OK, but thats every bit as wrong as being punished for what he tweeted and still has nothing to do with tolerating Sam's sexual preference.

I am agreeing... 100%. No matter how much you polish a turd it is still a turd.

I am just pointing out the underlying issue with the NFL and the way it frames things so that the fans think it is something else. This was about Miami and what happened last year, Bounty-gate was about concussion lawsuits.

The shield is trying to present a softer less liable side.

But I think if someone tweeted "OMG Terrible", it wouldn't result in a finae and suspension.
